Their friendship was forged in the fires of youth
and tempered in the tides of time.
Sharing life's warp and woof
To part these two should be a crime.
The one just starting out in life
fresh from school just starting work
the other a young but well-wed wife.
From helping others she would not shirk.
Starting out as neighbours in a mill-town back-to-back
they soon became the best of mates.
What one of them had the other'd not lack
they even shared the meat from their plates.
Survivors of a world by war made mad
Time it passed and then children came.
One had a lass the other a lad
but they shared a cradle just the same.
One by one they went to the font.
At different times but with the same intent
So that guidance each child would not want,
they alternated roles as God-Parent.
They taught those kids right from wrong.
Respect and good manners the Rule of the Day.
They gave them a conscience, clear and strong.
Yes they brought them up the proper way.
A husband's career led down a different road,
and wives must follow these new courses.
But the friendship withstood that heavy load.
To break it would take wild horses.
After a few more years grand children arrived,
but all too soon their partners departed.
And yet the friendship still survived.
Over fifty years and still not parted.
But the time has come as both knew it must.
The grim reaper has finally taken your best friend.
But though bodies crumble and fall into dust
The memory that's left will never end.
Author notes
Anne was my God-Mother. She died last week.
She was 4 foot 7 and her daughter Big Ann is 6 foot 1.
I was lucky to have 4 parents now I've only 1. This is for her!

A brave journey
Love and honor come through loud and clear. It is a great tribute indeed. Where do we go? I believe that ongoing means ongoing. That was a wonderful testimony to friendship.

A very good poem. You have done something I would like to do but always find very difficult - to celebrate these memories without being mawkish.

Awww...
You were a very lucky and very fortunate man! I had enough trouble with two parents, but I wouldn't have traded either one if I could have. This is a beautiful tribute and you have honored her well. I hope you cherish and hold onto all of those happy memories and be thankful for the one that remains.

I'm glad you liked the work.
Little Ann's loss makes a big hole but I take consolation from the last two lines.
