Once, a long, long time ago,
I had a cat named Cicero.
He loved to lie upon the chair,
And groom his snow-white, silken hair.
As a kitten he would wail
And roll around, and chase his tail.
He loved to play with balls and strings,
And other small and mobile things.
He never showed a sign of fear,
And sometimes liked a sip of beer.
While the talent he developed later
Was to open the refrigerator.
Now years have passed, and time gone by.
His soul has gone, beyond the sky.
Heaven surely has a place
Where tiny cats can romp in grace.
Author notes
My favorite poems are rhymed poems. Therefore, this poem is rhymed. It's about one of my cats, now gone to his reward somewhere out there beyond the sky.
I have no pets now, being violently allergic to them, and having been instructed by my physician not to get another one, but this one saved my life by waking me up during a fire, so I think he was worth writing about.
This poem is posted on my site for departed cats:

I so loved that verse, it read very easily - but so captured the essence of a cat;
sorry to hear about your severe allergies; are they to fur? am not sure if you're aware or not that it's possibly to get breeds of cats/dogs that don't have fur ;
or, to take tablets. a friend of mine, in australia, is a vet, and he's badly allergic to dog&cat fur, but takes his medication and therefore can pursue his carrerr
thanks for sharing! -
Sounds like an amazing pet! Saved you, can open the fridge. And I like the name. Ever thought about getting a reptile? No hair to be allergic to.

Thanks for entering. Enjoyed your rhymes.

This was really wel ldone, at first i was like "another regular poem" but then reading it, it had something to it that made it sound like the classic poems you read in books .... really enjoyed reading it, you didnt get sappy or sentimental and yet from the sounds of it it's clear that you loved this cat dearly .... great job on this and best of luck in the contest!

This piece is really sad, yet beautiful. The flow is perfect, as is the rhyming scheme that couldn't be forced if you tried...I mean, it went forth brilliantly. This piece was fantastic and I really hope it does well in the contest. Keep up the great work!

very nice!
How'd you teach your cat to open the fridge?! I want to teach my dog to do that.. but then she might eat all my lettuce.. (for some reason, she likes lettuce)..
Very nice imagery and rhyming.. Made me laugh, and sad to now that he is gone now.. hopefully to someplace good.. (Cause supposedly there is no animal heaven, pfft).. I hope you see him again..
Good Luck,
Jenna! -
Congratulations!

I certainly hope that "Heaven surely has a place, where tiny cats can romp in grace" because I am so looking forward to seeing some of mine again!
They bring us such joy while with us that it will surely make Heaven even more beautiful to see them there!
Thanks for sharing your talent and good luck!

A cat that could open the refigorator? Now that sounds like trouble!
-
hehe no, although I do speak a little bit of it. I just think "aussi" is the coolest word lol.
You're very welcome, by the way.
Love and light,

Thanks, jezz-also. Are you French?

This is a very sweet poem and the images of a tiny kitten chasing its tail, made me smile. I loved the name you gave your pet, Cicero, it was very unusual, but somehow very feline. Thank you for a very enjoyable read, and the best of luck in the contest.
PS This poem also educated me
I looked up Cicero on the internet, and learned about Marcus Tullius Cicero, politician and philosopher. You're never to old too learn!

'Cat Heaven' is a wonderful page.

I have always felt that... if 'heaven' does not include animals then how can it really be heaven? I enjoyed this soft and lovely poem.

I agree with you! There is surely a place for our feline friends in heaven. Their must be! we are told the lion shall lie down with the lamb. This was very nice and I did indeed enjoy it. Thank you for pointing me in this direction. Good luck in the contest.
