A Cowboy's Pain

another show, another town, another bar
as he enters there’s a beautiful woman
singing of a sad country love song
with the voice of a heavenly angel
sending his frustrations packing as he listens

calling to him with her soft melodious voice
penetrating the walls he spent years building
binding him with the chords of her sweet words
stirring passion and desire deep within him

sitting down at the bar he orders up a cold beer
back against the railing he listens to her
as she hits the different notes causing chills
never before has he heard such a heavenly sound

paying his tab, he gives her one final look
walking the short distance to his room,
longing for sleep that hasn’t come in three days
he is haunted in his dreams by the sound of her

although she raises a battle in his soul
oddly she soothes the pain the years have left
she’ll be his only inspiration to continue on

with only the memory of her smiling face
as he goes from one rodeo show to the next
her intoxicating voice fills the lonely nights

she will forever be embedded in his memory
and his dreams will be of her and only her
singing to him just as she did that night

This just goes to prove that cowboys don't get lucky all the time. I'm nowhere near a cowboy but I suffer the same fate as the one in this poem. When loneliness is your companion you'll find you have a great deal in common but little to talk about.

    Sincerely,
    Leo Long

a wonderful story woven in the fabric of these lines...the lonesome cowboy, someone I recognize all too well. Nicely penned.

I love the message in this piece because many of my family members are cowboys and live that lifestyle... so this hit pretty close to home for me.

Awww... this is such a sad piece and has an amazingly profound aura of loneliness surrounding the poor cowboy. I guess they can't all have the perfect, fairytale ending can they?
