Shell of a Being

Staring out the window
At the broken old street light
My mind wonders
And my thoughts take flight

Somewhere out there
He stands alone
Seeking endlessly
For a place to call his own

A lost soul
Out of place
Wondering the streets of dreams
With a frown upon his face

A feeling of lifelessness
Filling his heart
Dark and empty
It has been repeatedly torn apart

Worthless he is
Or so he thinks
So each night
To his lips he places a drink

A lover that is true
He now has found
No word she ever speaks
Not so much as a sound

She is smooth
She is warm
She is sweet
But she does harm

Feeling her curves
His hands caresses her
For he is blind to her
All he sees is a blur

Together, they are
Have been for years
Through happiness and laughter
Sadness and tears

She is there for him
Every night without fail
She, in a sense,
Is his Holy Grail

But his Holy Grail
She is not
And now long after being together
Internally his body does rot

A web of death she weaves
Entangled now, he lies within
No strength to fight
Never escaping this endless sin

Tonight my heart bleeds
And my soul cries
As I sit and watch
The bottle disappear as my friend dies

She killed him slowly
Without him seeing
Nothing left now
But a shell of his being

i absolutely love this - a beautiful and carefully-worded write. obviously a lot of work has been put into this, yet the flow suggests that the skill comes naturally. wonderful ending, very poignant.

Never a truer word has been spoken about the dangers of alcohol...This piece speaks volumes of truth, and the emotions behind it, make the piece all the more real. Excellent write.
