Jackalope™

‘Twas evening and each unpaved road
Awaited travel, like a slave.
This climate of New Mexico’s
Is harsh, and nothing will it save.

“Beware the Jackalope™ my boy!
Its cuteness and its good demeanor,
Those who go near it would be wise to fear it
For never was there a creature meaner.

Yet off I trekked into the wild,
Ignoring my grandpas advice,
Filled with the daydreams of a child,
I never knew I’d pay the price.

For as I climbed up a steep trail,
For reasons I need not defend,
I knew that I was doomed to fail.
My fateful trip was at an end.

“Have you slain the Jackalope™, my boy?
You’ve not? Don’t be ashamed of it.
It’s big and mean, and 12 feet tall, and-”
“Grandpa, that story is a bunch of...nonsense!

I went to find our “evil creature”,
Passed on through our “family tradition”,
And saw a flyer whose main feature
Was that the Jackalope™ won a competition


You want to know what it was for?
I’m positive that you must know.
It was for best made-up creature,
There’s nothing like it in New Mexico!”

“Well then,” my mentor said at last,
“I guess an explanation you are lacking…
It was…a test, which you just passed.
Your ready for REAL monster catching…

Beware the Chupacabra®, my lad,
Each sound it makes- a chilling note.
Keep your distance, and you’ll be glad
That it hasn’t changed it’s taste from goat.”
