Laughing carefree,
propped up on pillows,
eyes dancing, thoughts romping,
Talking the night/morning away.
Getting giddy,
drowsy but happy,
happier than ever you remember,
She younger than I will ever be.
propped up on pillows,
eyes dancing, thoughts romping,
Talking the night/morning away.
Getting giddy,
drowsy but happy,
happier than ever you remember,
She younger than I will ever be.
Author notes
This is one of the first poems I ever wrote. It was written in 1979 in Ithaca NY after a weekend spent at home with my dear Aunt Martha. The poem is about her. She was a mother-friend to me after my own Mom died when I was 15.

This brings tears to my eyes. "She younger than I will ever be." That's so sad and I think it's quite unusual for someone the poet's age to come up with this thought.
Thank you for submitting it to the contest. -
Excellent
The poem is lovely is shows your love and caring nature. When a parent dies it never easy both of my have died I still miss them. It shows the courage you had to go on and write such lovey poetry thanks for all of your kind comments take care -

This was a beautiful piece of writing. I love the way you styalised it.
As for old work. I know the feeling. When I Immigrated from Africa to Australia in 1988 I sent my stuff by sea. It contained books and papers of my work from 8 yrs old. The boxes got ruined by sea water and arrived with nothing more than wet stcky messes of stuff. So sad. Start gathering up again Sam. We owe it to the next generation to keep our histroy together. -
It's strange how as you get older, your spirit returns to what it was like when it was as a child. There was a wisp of wistfulness in this that closed off the piece quite nicely because the rest was a pure, untouched celebration of your aunt.

Oh! I enjoyed this one so much! I love being with the elderly, just listening to them and talking with them. You layed out a very peaceful and happy scene with this; the pillows propping her up and her getting happy. Awesome job! Steffeny

Thank you so much. I have a little book from the '70's that I've kept all these years. Most of it is other people's poems, but there are a few of my first pieces. I always loved this piece because I remember the joy of that night. As an aside, this was written when I was in the process of leaving my ex. I'm sorry you threw away your writings but you still have your memories and your pen to recapture the moments. Love and hugs - joanne

Oh how awesome. It is wonderful that you still have your past writings. When my first husband left me and our Son in 80...I through all my work away that I had written over the years..six years of words...my soul...trashed...I so regreat it. I had two separate books put together..one for my family and friends, etc...and one just for him...my x...why didn't I just toss the ones I had written for him...oh well......I digress.
It was a blessing that you had her in your life, a piece of your mama to hold on to. Lots of emotion in this...beautiful.
