Why There Is No 'O' In My 'G-d'

Missing image
by ~Gregg Rowe~

G. O. D. begat
GOD begat
God begat
G-d

Some fellow poets
question
debate
accuse
me of blasphemies
taking His name in vain
because I use a dash
to replace the o
they recognize the word
and accuse me of a spelling mistake
I debate this argument
penning my usage of G-d
with my passion

Some Christian poets
visit my pages
think they own the Almighty word
blinders on
forgetting there are other
religions
beliefs
cultures of the world

I continue my argument
stating a missing vowel
in a word
does not constitute
an error
but rather
I have adopted
the Jewish form

so that my G-d
does not represent
THE
Christian symbolism

my G-d
is not a singular God
but a Mosaic
of alternative beliefs
in a superior
cosmic force
greater than I

which is a spiritual journey
and if and when
I find my G-d
He will deliver me my
O

Author notes

The opening quote is a quote I used when I opened up an essay on this subject titled Who Is God? .  Through the history, translators have changed the whole concept of the word God to fit their doctrines.   In the beginning there were periods and spaces between the letters, they were dropped, then the last two masculine letters were changed to feminize the word, and then the Jewish doctrines spell it with a dash to differentiate their beliefs separately from the Christian concepts of God in their doctrines.  This is basically the whole thesis of the paper in a nutshell.  I don't think that a believer of another faith should be putting down the beliefs of another over a word that is universal to begin with no matter how we spell G-d .  The begat is of course from Genesis

Thank you for entering my contest! When I first read this, my first instinct was to dismiss it because this contest is supposed to be for those who practive non-mainstream religions. But after re-reading it, and thinking about it, I realized that even though you practice a "normal" religion, you get just as much grief as those who don't simply because of the way you spell a word. And reading your work, you understand that there are other views and other beliefs...you aren't quick to judge and quick to dismiss. This is an amazing piece, and again I thank you for entering my contest...Good Luck.

Thank you for answering my question with showing me to this poem, Gregg! I will not ask you again why you spell it G-d... Everyone is allowed to have their own faith, and me, being sort of an atheist, shall not be the one to preach about blasphemy. I believe that there is something out there, but it's what EVERY religion believe is their god, being the christian God, the muslim Allah, or any other religions god or godesses... Ok, all you fundamentalists out there!! It's out, and before you shoot a rocket at me, think if what I say is not right. Sorry, Gregg, I don't know how that one escaped. Jim

Interesting write which I liked a lot Keep writing, this was a wonderful poem about your vision of God/g-d/the Almighty, a very philosophical piece I think God is above spelling variations, anyway, and the Jewish form was G-d.
    All the best,

Cyan314: When penning it what Imeant was that we cannot seperate our sexuality or aspect of sex from our spirituality. On the road to enlightment, we need to discover self-love but to exist in the same space as other humans or even other living entities, we in turn love in other areas (our family, friends, neighbors), but during this process we connect an aspect of love through sex but we cannot seperate that from our spirituality for in enlightment, in order to enjoy sex with another, one must have enlightment to universal love because through the process of sex, we are sharing love. I think I have tried to accomplish to explain such a difficult aspect of enlightment because we are so accustomed to thinking of sexuality and sex as seperate entities but they are connected. Gregg

Would you make the statement, then, that sexuality is one in the same as love, or that it is merely an aspect of it?

Cyan: And we cannot foget the theories of Michel Faucault on sexuality for if we are to find universal love within ourselves and with others, we cannot seperate the ideology and say that our sexuality is a seperate entity from our spirituality when in reality, they are interconnected on the spiritual journey of self-love and acceptance.

Thank you so much for sending your comments on this poem, I am hoping that through this reading and penning that I am hoping to show people that spirituality is a universal enlightment and spiritual journey of love for one-self, then we connect to those around us and yes, the opposition to Darwin's theory is again getting a bad rap again, but that is what happens when radicals are elected into office and exercise power for personal gain instead of universal unification. I love the point you make. Even more so than that, however, I am unbelievably impressed by your reading list. Personally, I believe that organized religion is of little consequence; it sets forth a doctrine of superfluous rules and mythological ideas that set most followers astray from the real point: that every single religion (at least the ones that I have encountered, meaning the "major religions" on the planet, including atheism and agnosticism) or faith seeks primarily two things: LOVE and UNITY. That's it. Why must we follow extraneous rules and books when that is what the universal concious proves to be an ideal to strive for? In any case, I think it is quite commendable that you pull your knowledge and opinions from a plethora of cultural and religious text; that is truly the only way to seek a comprehensive spirituality, is it not? After all, no one man, woman, or faith could ever be entirely correct.

Plus, my added respect for placing the Koran and Darwin alongside all your other cases of examination; the former has become an opressed taboo of late, one which is harshly misunderstood by those of ignorance who know nothing of the true nature of Islam, and the latter is as much a set of metaphysical values as any religion and must be counted in with the best spiritual journeys. Commendable.

Bless you Greg...I am sorry that some fellow Christian poets have accused you of blashemy because of what you write or how you write. I have loved your work. You were one of the first poets I read when i found AP and you were one of the reasons I joined this site. We are all seekers after truth and we we each have a different path to take. Like momentarylapse I too hope you find him, so your O will finally be delivered. Writing God as G-D is certainly respectful as well as biblical. Take care and be filled with joy and hope and love. As always, I loved yur poem. - joanne

I consider myself a Christian and take no offense at your take of this topic. To me Christianity is about a relationship with Christ and other people wiht the same beliefs. My duty as a Christian is to share my experiences with others. I am not to force my religion on them. With this piece, you have done an excellent job of sharing your life experiences. All we can do is plant seeds, the rest is up te those with whom we speak and the Almighty overseeing them.

To be honest, I don't see how putting a dash in "G-d" is a bad thing. It's not as if it was meant to be blasphemic in nature; from what you've told me here, it has a definite religious use. I have nothing against those who worship differently from I; if one wishes to be, say, Hindu, or Buddhist, or Islamic, or whatever, so be it.

I don't like the term "new age Christian" much. A Christian is a Christian...at least, it should be, but thanks to various radicals and ultra-conservatives, as well as the many horrific crimes committed over the years by idiots (for instance: the Spanish Inquisition), Christianity's gotten a bad rap over the years, and in a way, I understand how people have come to dislike Christianity. Still, its basic principles (love thy neighbor [everyone], have an up-close and private relationship with God, don't judge people, etc.) are really pretty simple, yet so many fools who call themselves "Christians" have caused so much trouble in their fake attempts to follow those teachings. I haven't gone to church in some time, and while I have nothing against it (and would actually like to start going again), I like to think that not going is just fine as well.

Anyway, I've digressed immensely from what I was trying to state earlier. I don't understand why Christianity bans homosexuality...I have nothing against it, and don't see what's so terrible about it. Love is love, right? It shouldn't matter what form it takes.

Come to think of it, what the hell was I gonna talk about here? Oh man, I must've forgotten at some point while typing this...sorry 'bout that lol.

Well, since I pretty much forgot what I was initially going to say way back when I started this comment, I'll at least say this: this was well-written, well-said, and certainly well-noted. It's good to see that there are still intelligent poets out there that actually know what the hell they're talking about when it comes to...well, anything, really.

I was drawn to your Title, read the write, don't believe you have takening any name out of it's true meaning. If we look back in history we will find that many of the writing and teaching from certain books have been revised and rewritten to fit a culture that needed a more exact firmness of what God has intended for us. It is up to us as individuals to be true to ourselves and our inner spirit. A lot of us don't know a more one on one personal walk with God or how to even do that without thinking people will look at you funny or think you have lost your mind. We all love and want love in return, how we extend it is how we will get it back.....great though for so much additional comments that could go on and on for ever, as everyone has their own view and opinion, that is what makes us who we are in life....hopefully a better person.

I think that each and every person is entitled to their own beliefs and if you choose to take G-D as your form of religion then that is your right and noone else has the right to tell you otherwise. I also believe that the way in which you go about it is with respect to others, and that is a respectable thing. Many people, like those that abuse you for doing it the "wrong" way certainly don't show the same courtesy.

I'm not so much a Christian, but strong in Spirituality. G-d is not with 4 walls with a roof, it is found in those who believe. If you believe one way and I believe another, whit not sit down and discuss it like adults. Not by going around and hitting others upside the head with their beliefs. After such a discussion; we may not agree with each other, but we would have a better understanding of WHY each of us believe the way we do. Understanding will be the way in which fear and hatred will go by the way side and be no more.

I am definatly a new age Christian and I do not understand so many Chrisitans of my own time. Putting others down, believing only one thing - you really think we would be a lot less ignorant nowadays, but I suppose not.

No matter how you spell it, we're all going towards one unified belief - that we are all here for a reason and have some sort of higher power who deserves the praise.

I am a Christian! I follow the teachings of Christ. There are many things that us "Christians" do that I disagree with and many things that we do that I adore. I wonder if God Almigjhty of which there is truely only the one, the Great Creator, the builder of the world... minds at all how WE spell His name? Instead of showing love and understanding, kindheartedness, and goodwill, many seek to confound and confusion, and take on the cloak of a G.O.D. that distinguishes people. There is no such G-d. It is man/woman that seeks to seperate man/woman. It is man that seeks to be better than the next. GOD looks at ALL the same. I say, "seek and ye shall find" as the words of old say. I also say; "lean not to thine own understanding,, in all thy way acknowledge Him, and He shall guide your path". Those are my favorite Biblical scriptures.

I do beleieve they connect EVERYONE. Your G-d smiles on you Gregg. Sorry that same G-d doesn't smile on those who spell His name God differently, or they feel He doesn't. In my world He rains on everyone and sends sunshine on us ALL, in the same strength. I love that you shared this with us. Even though I spell my "God" in a Jesus/Christian way, I love you and would never judge you. G.O.D./G-d/GOD/G0D will judge our hearts and I am sure we will meet in His Heaven together, and all discover together that there is a totally different way to spell the word than even mere mortals know. LOL GREAT!

I don't understand why christians would put you down for that when for years they have been put down just because they believe that there is a greater force out there. shouldn't they just be glad that you too believe there is a greater force among us or waiting for us?? who knows but great write... ~Shadow~

you will not find a religion that suits your belief. You may change your belief to suit the true religion. I appreciate how you realize that things change over time and become less true. Doctrines are formed to suit the needs of people. Well I disagree with the whole thing. That is the changing of truth so that it becomes more widely accepted. I recommend more research. You are onto something very interesting. dig a little deeper and see what you find. Well done very researched

I for one, respect it, and I think that many people should think through what they accuse before they actually offend someone.
Sure, perhaps it's not the way that they're used to spelling the word, but it's not like it's some ridiculous blasphemy!

I had never heard of using a - instead of an O, but that's very interesting. I would ask you, "Where do you get the idea that we are praising different Gods? Aren't our religions so closely related?" But I don't want to get into a whole argument. I'm Christian (if you haven't figured that out ), and wouldn never insult anyone's religion. It really doesn't matter how the word God is spelled. I could spell God like "skdtnmw" and it would still mean the same thing.

When will people learn that we are not all built up the same way with the same beliefs and that they need to shove it and accept it. Ugh, I think everyone gets mad at those bigoted types of people. But they come in all shapes, sizes and beliefs, and are unfortunately are still living in the 16th century. Great poem here, it evoked alot of emotion! Great job!

Hey this is really great. Let me tell you my opinion of God. God is a force just like you mentioned. And who ever told you about blasfemies he's wrong. This poem is great and I think you're doing a good job. Don't let the other people disturb you when you are creating because your art can be destroyed by the hard feelings. And about the blasphemyes, only your soul can tell you if you upset GOD. good luck

My G-d! hehe. I like this, and where it was coming from. Eloquence abound in your writing.

    which is a spiritual journey
    and if and when
    I find my G-d
    He will deliver me my
    O

Best ending of a poem ever.

I too am on a kind of spiritial journey looking for something. I'm not too sure what yet though.. I guess I'll know when or if I find what I'm looking for, but if I don't I'm not feeling empty or whatever. My only problem is when Christians get TOO obsessive about the religion. My grandmother and father both have said I'm going to hell if I don't put my faith in god.

If I go to hell, it'll be one I've made for myself. Likewise for a heaven as well...is there a religion for that belief/idea? I dunno.

    Beautiful write.

    Leah

The picture is lovely as well.

This poem is awesome. Society is made up of bigots and close minded people who diss things they don't understand. Just because you believe in something doesn't mean you should force it down other peoples throats. I am a nondominational Christian and I believe in God. However, I have at least twenty friends who are athesits, a couple who practice Hinduism, and several catholic friends. Just because they believe something diffrent than me doesn't mean they are wrong. Why shuold I ignore them or accuse them of blasphomy when they are amazing people? The problem with people today is that they ignore diffrent cultures and traditions. That is insane!!! I totally respect this poem and where you're coming from. Great job on this write.

    Sorry for ranting!

Wow, I love this. I myself happen to be jewish and have the utmost respect for all religions. I always thought that it was simply to never erase it, not to be a single god. This was quite an insightful look into the world of religion. Great job.

    Bravo!

AS A Jewish poestess and the firm belief, that we must have respect for all religions as we are all brothers and sisters of G-D. And for the Christians that complained, let me tell everyone something you might not realize. Jesus, was Jewish and according to Jewish law if the mother is Jewish, then the children are Jewish Ergo Christian=Jewish! The St. James version of the Bible was written thousands of years after the crusifiction of Christ.I am not espousing any particular religion, just pointing out that Gregg has every right to write the word GOD however he chooses. If one doesn't like it, then espouse the freedom of speech that is allowed via our constituion.

Ok - I loved the poem. Just as good as the picture. I personally using 'X' as a subsitute for 'Christ' is tacky - kind of like 'R.I.P.' in place of 'Rest In Peace' but worse I feel. Good write anyway and well done. x

I am open to all ideas.

You know you are correct and some people get very upset over the use of X in Christmas when it is the Greek I believe symbol for Christ. Anyway I am not your typical cookie cutter Christian right now I have a contest myself on the ArchAngels and there were more than the three listed in the King James Version of the bible. In order to understand religion one has to look at all the documents preserved and presented by the Greeks and other that wrote about God, G-d, Yawyeh, Jevohah and other names mentioned. It always seems that there will be those that dispute what anyone says just because they like to argue per se. I like to see the other documents not presented in the typical bible that I have read. What do you think. I will read this one again when I can applaud it but right now just wanted to comment on this particular write.
