the soldier's thoughts

Dark is scorched the earth,
Yet darker still is scorched our skin.

Dry is parched the ground,
Yet dryer still are parched our throats.

Loud is the scream of shells,
Yet louder still are the screams of the dying.

Hot is the midday sun,
Yet hotter still are our rifles.

Red is setting of the evening sun,
Yet redder still is the blood of my comrades.

Hard are the blasts of the chopper’s blades,
Yet harder is the breath of my wounded brothers.

Piercing is the bayonet’s keen edge,
Yet more piercing still are the eyes of the dead.

Powerful is the rocket’s blast,
Yet more powerful is the strength of men when fighting in the cause of liberty.

Bright is the flare of flame,
Yet brighter still are the shades of freedom, red, white, and blue.

Author notes

well, don't really know where this came from, or what it is, but oh-well.

AUGH! in retrospect, i really don't like this very much at all. i'd kill it, except this is currently the only place it exists, and i do so hate to completely destroy something i wrote... either way, it's kind of over the top and obnoxious, so please, ignore it.

    Good work!

For a "don't know where this came from" this is very good! So true in each verse, and emotional. I like it!
