Childhood's Garden

Missing image

Oh childhood friends, come back again.
Let's run with the wind behind us.
Let's drive in a cardboard car,
take a journey through my backyard.
We'll go so far away,
time will never find us.

Because these days, I'm so alone.
I've lost the peace we used to know.
I've got to find my way back,
back to childhood's garden.

Author notes

Just feeling a little nostalgic.  The picture wasn't black and white but my lousy printer only scans in B&W.  lol

Riddle:  Guess which one of these members of the "Bangs Club" is me.  haha

I think you are the one with the very structure bowl cut, the last one on the right?

I miss the days of my childhood, the innocents only last for a while and when it is taken away, and real life kicks in, anyone would be crazy n ot to want to go back

I like the picture. I am going to have to find one equally as cute to show you up

I grew up in the boonies with only my brothers to play with. Our days were spent hunting the woods for bear tracks, starting fires with magnifying glasses, and climbing trees. Seems like so long ago.....

this is soooooo sweet......i guess everone loves those cardboard-box days. though i'm glad i still haven't lost my childhood friends yet and whenever we feel too nostalgic bout our childhood,we make a cardboard box, decorate it,then write whatever we are feeling at that moment,n then sit inside n read whatever everyone else has written so,i guess we just modified the carboad-box playing system
really, your poem is amazing n the pic's also cute

Aw, This is so sweet and yet at the very same pretty sad. I have a childhood picture of my two cousins, two childhood friends, and I and both of my cousins have went on to college and have forgotten me, one of my childhood friends died of cancer when we were ten and the other I have lost touch with when I was sixteen. Reading this reminded me of them and you have captured such a priceless picture of you, your brother and two friends. Wow, you really made me think of what I had when I was kid, sometimes I forget that I'm still just a teenager, although in ten months I'll techically won't be... Anyways, love you, wonderful, priceless piece you have here ---Sara

    Hi Susan,

Have you tried Classmates.com? It's great for finding old friends. That's how I found my old friend Dana, who is on the left in this photo. If you know their first and last names, you may be able to find them.

Yes, I do have the music for this poem/song, but only in my head.

    See ya,

    Mark xo

    Hey Sharon,

Yep, refrigerator boxes were the best. We also made a spaceship out of one and cut holes in the side for windows. A couple of football helmets for interplanetary travel, and we were on our way! lol

    Thanks,

This is beautiful. I think we all sit around and wish to go back sometimes. I remember the cardboard box days. Refrigerator boxes were best. LOL. This is a wonderful sentiment of the past though. Great job.

So I guessed and then read the comments. I two had you pegged as the second from the left - it is the eyes - they never really change. Compared it to the picture on your author page.
I sometimes wish I could go back to. I have lost contact with all the kids I grew up with, and I knew them from preschool on. (small town girl)
I love the picture you paint, sounds like a great summer of fun in the sun.
Well written. do you still have the music for it?

    Excellent! Nice and nostalgic!

Re: your poem..I hope that you have found your way back to childhood's garden. Re: pic'..I would have guessed second from the right but I looked through the comments and now know you are the second from the left. Sorry to hear about your brother. I lost one of my sisters in 1996. I often think about her and the way things used to be. I wish we could go back in time and relive our favorite days..what a blessing that would be!

The picture of the four of you with your bangs reminds me of the Beatles.

What a great idea for keys! You were a creative child, too!

    Hi Suzy,

Nope! Second from the left. Second from the right is actually my brother. He died in 1998. One of the most poignant thing about old photographs is how they capture a moment of perfect peace, the smiles totally oblivious to the bumps and bruises that lay ahead.

On a happier note, I am still in contact with the one on the left. His name was Dana. He was my best friend. He just had his first child and is very happy. The kid on the right's name was Henio, I think. I'm probably misspelling it because I've never heard that name since. I think he was half-Hispanic (thus the "io" at the end of his name.) It might have been Sergio or something. Dana and I had some grand adventures - as grand as possible in Santa Monica, anyway. lol

Since you said you're enjoying my childhood stories, I think I'll go write one and post it right now. One of Dana and my adventures. Actually, misadventure is probably a better word. lol

    I hope you're enjoying the 3-day weekend!

    Hi Mindy,

Ding Ding Ding! You guessed it! lol

I know exactly what you mean. I probably remember childhood so fondly (which is common with poets in general) because I've made some big mistakes in life and long to return to the time before they occurred so I could avoid making them at all. Unfortunately, of course, life doesn't work that way. Life can be understood in reverse, but it can only be lived forward. Some decisions are irreversible. So we need to take stock of what we haven't lost, what we still have, and make the most of it. The irony is it's the loss that gives us the appreciation for what we do have. It's also wise to keep reminding ourselves that there are people who have lost much, much more than us - limbs, sight, brain function, even their lives - especially on Memorial Day.

I didn't mean to sound preachy. I'm just watching a Memorial Day show and counting my blessings right now.

    I hope you're doing well.

    David,

I appreciate the response but I wish to God you could spare me the insults about my political beliefs. I consider yours "drivel" too but I don't feel the need to remind you constantly. Give it a rest, will ya? lol

I'm glad you liked this one. I actually wrote it about ten years ago while sitting on a step in Venice, Italy, with a friend playing a guitar. So this is one of the few poems of mine that has music to go with it!

    Thanks,

    Mark,
It is the B&W that adds to the nostagia of your poem. Hmm.. wonderful memories. Refrigerator boxes were our doll houses and oven boxes were my brothers box cars. Along with the wheels of my doll carriage! Shoe boxes were Barbie's dream house. Storage boxes, became sleds in winter. Those were the days when we USED our imaginations. We made the sounds of the engines reving, dolls crying. Thank you for the walk down the lane. Oh and I know those eyes and thatimpish grin anywhere. Your the one with the mischeivous twinkle in his eyes..

Before I dive into our usual political disagreements and view of the world, I want to demonstrate that I am a sucker for good poetry and thought. This is exactly how I feel and it is beautifully penned. You are a good person at heart, which is why your political drivel so annoys me. This is being book marked.

I loved this poem - but I wish you would have kept typing more! I adore your poetry and it always manages to take my mind back into my childhood and remember all the memories I have as well. *sigh* I wish, I really do. I wanted to grow up SO badly, and they all told me..but I didn't listen. I wish I was still 7..when the "bad guys" were the people who wouldn't let you stay up past 9

    Hi Honeydew,

The best thing about our cardboard cars was the low maintenance costs. No $2.50 a gallon for gas. They were fueled by imagination! lol Summer's on it's way here in California and the air conditioner in my car doesn't work! $1,000.00 minimum to fix it. I'm thinking of building another cardboard one!

I know what you mean about leaves. They were always put to good use to. They were great for diving into or rolling around in with the dog.

(Oh, and I'm not the kid on the right. That was my friend Henio.)

    Dear Mark,

This brought smiles to me... The poem also highlights how precious the joys of childhood are, in spite, and probably because of their simplicity and truthfulness.

    Love and best wishes,

Thanks, Ankeeta. I'll tell you which one is me in an IM. It will be interesting to see if anybody gets it right. It's amazing how many different people we are during one lifetime - baby, youngster, adult, oldster - with the same mind carried by all of them.

    Thanks!
