Look at you go!
You are at the peak of your game,
Matching people's wits until you're the same.
You follow the wind wherever it blows,
Where your personality stops, no one knows.
It must be quite a troublesome task,
Juggling interests, changing your mask.
I do not blame you, I know you like friends,
But what will you do when the sheet of fog ends?
You can't hope to hide it, they clearly will see
The culture chameleon you try hard to be.
The masks that you juggle, they'll all start to fall,
And down will come baby, friendships and all.

This poem is excellent; it has perfect rhyme and meter, and it struck a real chord with me because I used to be a bit like this… when I was younger. I’ve often thought how ‘chameleon like’ I was… changing the way I behaved depending on the company I was keeping… I even wrote a poem about it called ‘Chameleon’... but I don’t have it on AP because it’s rubbish.
It came to a head one day when a rather prim-and-proper friend, who I went to church with, called round at the same time as a more down-to-earth friend, who had a tendency to curse a lot. It was excruciating for me… I just didn’t know how to behave… haha… it was at this moment that I realised I had chameleon tendencies… I have since changed considerably and at the risk of offending certain people I have learned to assert my own personality more… but believe me it’s been a hard habit to break.
Anyway… I think I may print this superb poem of yours off, so that anytime I feel myself lapsing into my old chameleon ways again, I can read it to remind myself of the dangers.
