Transplanted

Liquid eyes as dewdrops
on pinkening petal-cheeks
lips suffused, smolder with promises ;
intoxicating fragrances
permeate sepal, buds, corolla
of this exquisite Celtic bloom

The sanguine Spanish sun,
accustomed ever to smile upon
a well-stocked rosebed of it's own
reflects the radiant glory of an Irish rose
nurtured by it's balmy bounty
and has the grace to blush.

Author notes

FORE-PLAY - Option 7, Rose Petals

L I L T A N D R H Y M E

I am from Ireland, and this was written to my wife, whose beauty flourished and was burnished exotic in the warm and splendid Spanish sun - the fiery beauty of Spain, in its turn, was enhanced by her presence.

Sometimes you need to transplant a rose to a sunnier place to realise how very beautiful it is.

This poem has an almost intoxicating, passionate and romantic feel of love within the depths of the words, which is brought to life by the use of excellent imagery, both of the lady and of the flowers under a warm Spanish sun. It’s sprinkled lightly with alliteration, which adds interest to certain points within the poem.

The first stanza is very descriptive of various facial features of the lady and I found the impact of the line “lips suffused, smolder with promises;” particularly expressive. Imagining the intoxicating fragrances is easy for any reader who has experienced flowers sweet perfumes being enhanced by the sun’s heat. Sweet-peas and wallflowers came into my mind as they are wonderful scents in the warmth.

“The sanguine Spanish sun” starts off stanza two in a very positive manner, and I’m sure many would agree that Spain has a well stocked bed of it’s own for it to smile upon, but I think it is lovely the way the author has taken his Irish Rose into a foreign environment and found its real beauty once more. That’s so very romantic. I think the last line is wonderful because it shows how ‘the rose’ responds.

Thank you for entering the Raven Contest 2007 and good luck with your entry! Your work may also be viewed by other Raven judges.

This is a well written, well worded peice in which imaginery, adjectives and noun aim in one direction. I can't find any word out of place. The simile with the rose works very well as both the reading ans the metaphorical level, so there's little to add.

    Beautiful

This poem is very sweet and satisfying. I can feel the depth of love and adoration you feel for the subject. The use of the rose and various elements that make up the flower in direct comparison the beauty of your loved one is enchanting. What really takes this poem to the next level is how the rose is transformed and made even more alluring by a simple change of scenery. The combination of the flower with the addition of the wonderfully descriptive environmental influences really make this great. Thanks for sharing this beautiful poem.

This was simply beautiful... elegant... it was all so fresh and lively.

Your adjectives truly made the poem. They gave the reader such a vibrant burt of imagery, that there was no way we could help but love it.

Also, I think that the length was perfect. It wasn't too long, or too short. Just right!

Best of luck in this contest. I hope that the judge will find this as great as I did.

I think your authors comment really gave this piece more credit in my eyes than i would have at first. I thought this was simple about roses, though beautifully written, i thought it more of the same. After a second glance it become more in my eyes. Great piece, take care and God bless.

What an amazing tribute to your wife..I love how you are from Ireland and are writing of Spain as well..since I am a Spanish major who loves Celtic music !!! LOL!
Anyway, as for the piece itself, I was deeply touched. "reflects the damask glory of an Irish rose
    nurtured by it's balmy bounty
and has the grace to blush." Such a cool way to use a metaphor..and you kept it strong throught the poem! Great!
Your authors comment was as poetry too.."Sometimes you need to transplant a rose to a sunnier place to realise how very beautiful it is." Your wife must be very proud of you, and you must lovely her dearly...So sweet!!
Thanks for entering this masterpiece into my contest!

wow, that was a beautiful piece. I see the symbolism in this, not only transplanting the rose, but the rose could symbolize your spirit. Transplanting your spirit to a sunnier, life filled place to energize and empower yourself. That is beautiful, and I applaud you.

    The lines I like...

    Liquid eyes as dewdrops

Which opens the poem so excellently

    and ..

reflects the damask glory of an Irish rose
and has the grace to blush.

Which ends the poem very powerfully.
