In the unbearably hot summer night,
From the depths of a darkened bedroom.
Were spotted two points of light,
As they flickered around in the gloom.
They captured the young lady's fancy,
She watched them draw closer to her.
Unaware of why they were dancing,
Her eyes were now widened in horror.
A misshapen creature advanced,
Through the depths of garden shadow.
This scene held her in a trance,
And chilled her to her marrow.
She ran to unlock her door,
From her window came a chilling scratch.
The creature pushed in a window,
And quickly had open the latch.
The power to scream had left her,
Though her heart continued to race.
As the creature deftly strode closer,
She saw its shrivelled brown face.
The ghoulish eyes burnt with hunger,
Its teeth were yellow and bared.
The fleshless arms made to grab her,
And caught her fast by the hair.
He glared at the face he would mar,
She stared back somewhat meek.
Teeth ripped into her jugular,
And she let out a harrowing shriek.
Her brothers smashed down the door,
But the creature made its escape.
It left this scene of gore,
And ran for the churchyard gate.
Next morning the brothers arose,
With vengeful intent on their minds.
In the day as the creature dosed,
They would make him pay for his crime.
The sight within its tomb,
Was sickening to say the least.
Bodies lay around half consumed,
By that ghoulish undead beast.
And when they opened its coffin,
His festering body was found.
The creature was near decomposing,
All shrivelled and bony and brown.
They dragged it into the sunlight,
And erected a giant pyre.
They finally ended their plight,
In a mass of black smoke and fire.
Although you regard it poorly,
I warn you it was not feigned.
And so ends this grisly story,
Of the vampire of Croglin Grange.
Author notes
Only my second vampire poem. This is based on a "true" case of vampirism that happened ages ago in Cumbria, England. When I read the original account of it I was alone in the dark at about 2:00am, I think I'll go reinforce my windows now...
