The Smell of Deep Sea Life

Missing image

The octopus and the octopi
the goosy and the goosi
the hibiscus and the hibisci
do not compare to the deep sea wonders
that we find so utterly repulsi…

No graceful lines of the spiral shell
no beautiful hues of the crystal quartz
no bursting lights of the meteor

                                      over a desert sky;
yet for eons before us, in the recesses of time
perennially and successfully attracting new mates;

so what glories of the future for you may await?

Echoes and reflections are your world.
What shivering emotions dwell in your hearts?
Swimming through the vacuous seas of life
surrounding your reason for being in the night
when darting in unending sideways flights
that teeter on the edge of your void
          among the deep sea tides

what wiles do you there employ?

Outlandish and bizarre by our over-land standards
like offbeat celebrities in an odd film fest

we see you but we can’t fathom you yet
we find you in the greatest ocean depths
suspended farther from heaven then hell
your home, the dark places of the earth
where you dance your survival in the blank, murky jel...

A sensitive monster you are, no doubt
   feeding off the ocean energies
just beyond our grasp, yet within our reach
no doubt playing your ballads as we sleep...

OK, perhaps no voices to sing such a phrase
and no soft-lit photo shoots to advertise your wares
but since the carefree abandon of your youthful run
you paint a self-portrait of lives so rare
in maybe a greater intensity than our own
with a degree of warmth much like that of the sun’s...

You’re born, you live, you breed, you die,
your bones now scattered under a barren sea-sky
your string of love letters inscribed in the brine
giving this reigning species a moment of respite
as it wonder at your mysteries

 relinquishing upon you their revelries.

Leave it to you to precieve beauty even in such unattractive creatures as these! While I'm sure they are alluring to each other.Really ugly to us! Fantastic write! I loved your descriptive ability in this!Great job.~~Suseann

LOL...goosi....one of my favorite words. Seems that one or more goose should be a goosi...based on octopi.

I think this is the best one (and actually one of the best you've written)-- this contains an element of 'the edge' -- a darker season upon the mind with currents running deeply below the placid waters....and depths we can only fathom in reflective glare.

Superbly written -- I like this piece VERY much. You've managed to capture something elusive here.

Bohb is certainly a talent in and of himself, isn't he? I love to visit the Monterey Aquarium. I am as bad as any child for becoming glued to the scenes before me. You background images took me right there, which made this piece an added pleasure for me.
