Depression

I don't know what to do for you.
I'm at a loss.
I've paid the cost.
I've tried and tried.
I think a little of us has died.
I don't know what to do for you.

I made my body a wall
To stop you
From harming you.
I've tried and I tried
And then you nearly died.
I don't know what to do for you.

Help me. Show me how to help you.
I'm at a loss
You're the boss.
I've tried and I tried.
I've fought and I've cried.
I don't know what to do for you.

Author notes

I have a friend who's been very depressed. I've done what I can to help him. A week ago he crashed his car and is now in the hospital. I had him going to a day program before that. Now I'm at a loss as to how to help him. He may be released from the hospital next week. I was hoping he'd admit himself to an inpatient program, but that's likely not going to happen. I may be able to get him back in the day program but it will be difficult since he is now without transportation. Also he needs physical therapy for a broken ankle.

having suffered from depression in varied forms for my entire life, i can appreciate the frustration the poem encompasses, its tough to understand, especially for the one stuck observing someone in this state...its difficult for me when i get dpressed, sometimes, i feel so lost and alone, no amount of talking helps...its a downward spiral that (at times) no amount of earthly love can break through. In those moments i dont even know i am saved and cry for hours in despair until the cloud finaly lifts. God bless your compassion and thanks for sharing this. Blessings and best wishes, ~richard

    Delightfully special

The thing that most never consider is: "PUT THEM INTO THE MASTER'S HANDS;" The Lord God of Heaven and Earth knows best. To some- this is a cope-out; but in-TRUTH, this can be a deeper form of prayer and help (as FAITH is God can do what we can't). Faith should never be built on works but surrendering our burdens and cares to the one on the throne.
This muse, of yours melphleg, reveals “a lot of compassion and concern;” may Wisdom's compass direct you and lead you and yours...

It is so hard to see a friend in need and not be able to help them. You seem to be a person who cares a great deal. I hope that everything works out for your friend. I think he probably needs an anti-depressant to help him shake his depression. Where there's a will, there's a way. Good Luck to both of you..I said a prayer that he'll be okay.

umm its not my place to say but i will anyway lol...its hard to help someone when they're depressed, but my opinion is you can't. They need to decide they want it first. Otherwise, help is just another escuse to rebel and be more depressed. I agree with titan### on the last part...truths; lie if you have to...tell him what he wants to hear. I think that people who are depressed...the worst thing you can do is be in their face and telling them what they should nd shouldn't do...Good luck!! Your poem was nicely written, and it flowed well. Great work!

i'm sorry about your friend. i really like your poem, its very descriptive when it comes to spilling out your emotions. it really sucks how sometimes you want to help someone but you have no idea how. good luck with your friend and all, i hope everything will be ok.

Im just guesing outa the blue that your friend has a big ego. for a person like this you need to knock some kida sence into him. just talk and talk of wat they need to do, give them logic, give them half truths, white lies, just make sure they get watever help they need, or dont let them out your sight!

    excellent

Surely someone with all the people you know in your group study or his true friends will try and help him somehow
God always provides......and hopefully he will in this situation too....
Your friend is going to first have to learn not to take a pills drink alochol then get behind a car wheel and drive
Luck was on his side this time...next time it may not be
Maybe the Dr will change his mind....let's hope so
You can't carry everyone's load hun ya know
Take some time for yourself too or you will short circuit yourself....
Will definitely keep your friend in my thoughts and prayers
And hope this little bit of realization has woke him up
    Hugs
    Susan~~~
