The woodpecker

Missing image

I hear you tapping..tap,tap
in your melody of trees
pummelling sharply..searching,
tasty morsels bark enshrouded
scuttle deep beneath..
reds and greens adorn
your person worn with pride
and care pruning.preening
feathers slickly fastened with
a care...........

We have downy woodpeckers around Ottawa, and they do tap like that, but they are mainly black and white. Your poem describes this behaviour and its reason very well. This is a good portrait.

Thank you so much Cheryl for your comments..in a way it was a random picture..I was looking for one native to British Isles...but I didnt understand the different habits between them. I am not sure if we have them here in Ireland as I have never seen one but remember them as being highly colourful... Perhaps I should make suet cakes and find out if they do frequent our island

I really like your poem. I love woodpeckers and I have many different varieties in my back yard. I have never had the privilede to see a green woodpecker. They are natives of England and Wales...other areas as well, but not USA. I am in south Texas right now.

I am wondering if you have randomly picked a photo for the poem? The reason I ask, green woodpeckers do not hammer (tap)
They are in the woodpecker family and look like woodpeckers, but behave differently. It mainly lives on the ground, where it's favourite food lives: ants and termites. The bird is best recognized by its laughing sound. It is like the "black swan" of the woodpecker family.

I did enjoy your poem very much. If you really like wood peckers around, you might want to offer some suet cakes. You can buy them very inexpensively, or look on line for a very cheap way to make them yourself. It will attract differnt kinds of woodpeckers and other clinging birds. They will visit you every day, all year.

    Thanks for your entry.
    Cheryl Cheers!!

I think woodpeckers are one of the most beautiful species of bird around, unless it is early morning and they are working just outside my window. They are still beautiful, but much less enjoyable at that moment. Keep penning, I always enjoy your words.

That would be a job that I would have loved...Poor bird would have a bent beak hammering on a hot tin roof . Thank you for your comments, they are appreciated

    Enjoyable poem

I have several different species of thes around my home. I kind of get tickled when they drill tin. They are also a very likeable bird but then my uncle was a game warden and we like wildlife.
