Aphrodite Tokens
Do you think you put the pride in my stride?
Or the pep in my step?
No man...
They were mine before Adam ever knew Eve.
Do you think you wrote the words I have sung?
Placed the air in my lung?
No Sir...
I possessed them before the second hand of the clock ever spun
I did not come from your rib,
but from my mothers womb.
Brought into this world with her pain and her joy.
Her sweat and her tears.
It was a woman that gave me life.
Took this man's seed, and made it bloom.
Her blood is my sap, not that of my pap.
Do you think you placed the goal in my soul?
Am I so wrong to be strong?
Hell no brother....
I was who I am, before the stars ever shined!
Do you think my attitude is rude?
Do I offend because I won't pretend?
Sorry again my friend....
I am woman, I am mighty, better then Aphrodite
I am no token, can't you see....
I am me.

Marissa,
I will share something with you. I am working on being published, and if I succeed this will be the title of my book. Yes, I am feminne proud, and yes it is reminiscent of Maya's work. She is a queen and a great influence to me. Thank you for the wonderful comment. I am so happy you enjoyed this write.

Reminded me of Maya Angelou! Marvelously penned! With good diction, great tone and just... wow!
This made me smile proudly! I am glad to see someone right about the strength of a woman!
Beautiful again

Beautifully written and still expressing the strong woman that you are.
I adore this one.
with love,
Criss -
nice, I always admire women-empowering stuff, and you wrote this well...
-
Thanks hun. New type for me, but happy with it. I get tired at times of being a statistic, or "just a girl". You are right though as far as this could transcend gender...it is more about pride I think. My spine is definately steele. LOL. Thanks again

Thanks sis!!
It came to me in an odd way, as though any of my writes enter my wee noggin in any other way. LOL. Listening to tribal music on a show on discovery. The beat was there. Odd. So I tried...and hope it worked. LOL. I am on a mighty Aphrodite, girl power trip right now I think. A break from the sentimental and mushy. Thanks so much sis. Much love as always.

We are strong within our hearts and minds and that is how it should be. The message to me is "Take me as I am or it's your loss." This is a testament to a proud spirit regardless of gender.(over all positive message)
It had a definite beat in my head so yeah it's beat! I really loved this!

Nicolette...
I wish I could have heard the speach. I imagine you were amazing, and encouraging. It very well may be telepathy ( spelled right
) Feminist is a term that is as individual as say....beautiful. Every woman and man have their own idea of what it is. I believe it is good to be feminist in the sense of being proud of being the fairer sex. So many thanks for this wonderful comment my sister and friend. I am honored, as always.

*STOMPS FEET* Okay... this was pure beauty!! I really enjoyed this one, made me smile, for the strong woman I know you are and the strong woman I would like to become. Strong, Independant, GO BILLIE JEAN! This one... this one, is pure you!!!
lots of love to you beautiful,
Criss -
Bravo to you!
Must be telepathy (or how do you spell that word, lol), Billie Jean! Just this afternoon I was delivering a speech at a women's group about personal boundaries. If we take responsibility for our own boundaries and when our boundaries are clear, we are free...and that does not mean that we are selfish or uncaring. Yes, this is not about men (like you I adore them), but this is about when to say yes and when to say no. I like this yes and no of you. I don't really know if I should call myself a feminist, but what I know is that I am a strong, independent woman who can think for myself. And you are that woman too. Bravo - and let us surround ourselves with "safe people"!! If I had a hat I would have taken it off to you!!

halleluja!
I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is; I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat...
Ramble on sister dear...
there is a difference between being equal with men,
and being the same.
Great piece, as always.
much love ~ criss

PJ...
May I say Amen ( though I be a witch ) to your comment? Amen brother. I do not hate men. No. I adore them. You are right. More about me then for all women. Glad you saw that. Only reason I assumed men may dislike it is, well I have had it happen before. LOL. Thank you for such a great comment. I appreciate it. The anger you sense is actually lack of sleep and coffee. LOL. Damn I need some caffiene. Many thanks again

Well, ok, I'm a fella, and I really liked it. I liked the beat, I liked the feist ( which is not a word, but if it was would be genderless! ). Despite the frequent feminist, almost aggressive lioness challenges to the male pride ( pun? ) I could also just read it as a statement of personal strength, comfortable self-worth. Although I'm sure it will be adopted as an anthem by female readers, I saw it less a clarion call to your sistas than an affirmation to yourself of yourself as a completed individual, unbeholden to anyone.
The sense of anger toward to male of the species is present ( we can spot that sometimes, y'know... ) but to me not the essence of the poem, which is that you are proud of who you are and damn sure you get the credit for it! )
My 2c worth.

Gabbi....
My morning is now made. LOL. I adore sweet Maya. She is strong, wise, and intelligent. Thank you. I wish I had a fraction of her talent. This was a fire in my belly aching to get out. I am not a bra burning feminist ( need my bra's man ) but feel women to be the stronger of the species. Thank you so so so much.

Fabulous fabulous fabulous! I am simply bowled over by this poem, it's just the sort of style that I love. It reminds me very much of the works of Maya Angelou - I can't help but make similarities between you both.
-
Awesome write, powerful. I like how it flowed also. Keep it up.
-
First off I love the name. LOL. I have a sticker that says..."I poke badgers with spoons". Maybe that is why you are disgruntled? Adorable.
Thanks for the enthusiastic comment. I am happy to see my fellow femmes liking this. Don't imagine many of the fellas will like it. Oh wells. I have another one called woman you may like. Thanks again hun....good to see someone besides me and my lazy muse like it.

fantastic!
Beautiful! I want to print this one out and hang it on my wall. You did such a wonderful job of asserting your individual strength with humor and sensitivity; the imagery you used was really vivid and perfectly suited to the subject. I really love how the overall message of your poem was that a woman doesn't need a man to be happy, especially when she has her self-respect. Just a smashing poem overall, and I adored it. Thanks for sharing it with us! -
me tinks...twas the rhyme scheme. LOL. My futile attempt at beat poetry. Hmmm. I need coffee too. Thanks for the reminder my caffiene addict in arms!! (~~)?
Thanks for such a great comment. I am glad I gave ya a giggle. Think we both need one. Girl Power!!

Yay go you, go me, go us hehe. This drips with attitude and and in your face strength that I like seeing from you Billie. There's almopst a light hearted undertone to this (that may just be me reacting to the rhyme though and not having had my coffee yet well... my mind isn't quite awake).
I like your rambling.
Love and light,
~jan
