 Our Roadside Vacation

Missing image

Marquee signs beckon our wanderlust
straddling the dusty highways
of a bygone age.
Parts are missing on the old signs,
boldly claiming ‘color TV!’

Highway hosts in cowboy land
and on the main drags through small towns
sporting their Thunderbird Motels
and roadside attractions to get us to stay around.

Neon lights brighten up long, dark interstates,
offering rest, relaxation, and RV parking!

Family rates and outdoor pool,
pinball on the terrace,
loads of sun,
built in the 1920’s
with old carports next to the rooms
for the guests of fading yesteryear.

We can rest in peace
at the Tombstone Motel
or catch a desert theme
in Monterey.
A coconut grove ambiance
in Florida,
and it’s just down the street
from the Metro Diner. We stay!

Genuine hospitality
and a cup of coffee
at friendly Norma’s roadside Café,
where we can wash dishes
to earn money for the rest
of our vacation...
Then back to our room
and its grand feature-- the micro-fridge!
Then over to highway bowl
for some pin action
and top it all off with a B-movie
at the single-screen theater
for a dollar fifty.

When we’re in Vegas
we'll stop by a roadside wedding chapel
and get hitched!

I could go on and on and on and on,
but I'll save some for our next vacation!

I came here to have my literary palette tickled in the manner that only you can do and I find out that somebody has just used my contest idea! I just typed it up last night before going to bed but I was waiting to post it. This is great Wayne. You did your usual exceptional job.

    I'm giggling here...you know I'm telling my age a bit when I say...geeze, I thunk I been here before a time or two..hehehehe
All those trips just driving thru, especially on the cycles, they might not seem wonderful to some people, but at the time...and I'm going to use one of your quotes...
"To me, anything beyond my driveway is 'exotic'."

And they were! Thank you for this funny brouchure of those little places along the way. I smiled as I read your words that were as smooth as the chocolate dripping down your background

Thanks for joining us, good luck! Sandi
