Graduation

We'll spend our summer nights together.
In front of a fire under the summer sky.
The stars will look down at us in envy
As we laugh until silence takes control,
And then we'll realize, these are the last nights we will share.

There is something inside of us that you have yet to see.
Something emerging, now that we are free.

We'll look at one another and think.
Thoughts the same though we don’t know it.
Nostalgia’s bitter sweet remnants rest on our lips.
Tasting the moments of the past such as this.
Then the pains of the years resurface not too long after.

There is something inside of us that you have yet to see.
Something emerging, now that we are free.

Tears will flow and hit the dirt.
Darkening the ground below.
But ahead, the future, not too far out of reach,
is bright as day in the dark of the night.
Shadows cast by the fires dwindle in our bright futures.
We will shine brighter than the sun.
Just you wait, we will make you proud.

There is something inside of us that you have yet to see. Something emerging, now that we are free.

...

Now that we are free

...

Now that we are free

yes the transition from high school to the real world definatly does cause a change in people. I remember when I graduated and i thought how bad can it be...hah. lol. This poem is very good for a couple of reasons. You mention being set free..Set free from high school and all that it intails but not free from the world which can be rough and cruel but wonderful at the same time. But you will emerge eventually the person you have grown into. This is a very good poem thanks for sharing

Hey Joshy! I was looking through new poems by my favorites, and I stumbled across this beautiful little masterpiece! What an excellent way to describe what everyone must be feeling on graduation day! I gave the farewell speech at mine, and I didn't know what to say...how do you say goodbye to people you have grown with and loved for so many years? How do you say, "This is it. I may never see you again. Have a nice life," to your best friends? Anyways, I think you captured the feeling in a lovely, aching kind of way. Spectacular job, my friend. Your words could melt the stoniest of hearts.

This is really cool, the wisdom of freedom is captured when you want it the most. really good.

"And" is the devil. This could just be me being marginally insane, but starting lines with "And" (or sentences) makes the reader stumble through those lines, and hasn't really worked since the bible.

Again, this could just be me.

I guess it's alright. But I still am no where close to how good you are.
