Misconceptions

Does it really matter so much?
What real difference does it make?
will the earth fall off its axis,
will it make the mountains shake.

If their skin's a different colour,
or their eyes slant at the ends,
does it really make them outcasts,
or they can't be a man's best friend.

If their sexual persuasion,
is somewhat different to  our own,
who are we to condemn them,
when inside its all they've known.

If a woman loves a woman,
or a man's attracted to a man,
or they lean in both directions,
being true to their life's plan.

Does it make them so unworthy,
to be part of this human race?
they should hold their heads in pride,
to look the world straight in its face.

For they too are human beings,
and no different from the rest,
they deserve to be respected with
the differences they've been blessed.

What I love about this piece is that it is so very easy to relate to and read, yet it is FULL of honest truth! It makes one think about just how petty the world (ourselves) can actually be sometimes. Fabulous!

THANK YOU!!!!!!this was wonderfully written and so needed. I am sitting here with tears sswimming in my eyes in gratitude. I am tired of always being told, or even worse, treated like a second class citizen, denied rights that people not only take for granted, but abuse as if it were garbage! Yes things are miving forward, but once a movement has started, none have taken this long to go so slow. OK off the box and no more on this one now, im off to the next ones! Best of luck in this and all of your endeavors. Hetohke'e *

I am visually impaired and many treat me differently so I can understand this write 100%. I used to hate my difference... I used to loathe it and blamed god for making me this way. Now I am glad. Maybe I wouldn't be so good at poetry (well, I'm not that good, but I'm better than some) and maybe not so good with helping others out and being so empathic and caring. I just believe now that everything happens for a reason and I can't spend my life threating as there is nothing I can do about it and at this stage of science nothing anyone can do. So I live my life, and don't let it bother me. If you are different - say it loud and be proud. Difference is a good thing, not following the pure ignorance of society. My sisters best friend was murdered in london for being gay... Jody Dobrowski, may've heard about him on the news. Clapton Common, I think? Anyway, very insightful, heartfelt write once more.

You have such a sincere and strong message in this wonderful poem, Ann. I agree 100 % with what you've written. We don't have to agree with everything the other person does, but we do need to respect their right to live the way they choose, just as we do.

    An excellent poem

i agree with your words wholeheartedly. having been discriminated against myself for being mexican looking,[half-french,half-inuit(yupik)eskimo in heritage]and these days getting so many leers from "all american" types who obviuosly think erroneously that i'm an arab.

Spoken without an ounce of judgement or prejudging. I really don't understand why the government is all in our homes. What people chose to do with thir lives is their business. Love is love.

Your rhymes are always exact and your message leaps from the page. Let people live, is what I say! Respect is the wherewithall!

I judge people based on nipple size, does that make me a bad person? Does telling you this make me a bad person? Am I a bad person? How many times can I say "bad person"? In all fairness, I was a victim of "racism" during my school years because of my dark skin and it didn't seem to bother me quite as much as it did the culprits. If people could just wake up and see the big picture instead of all the little differences the world would be a much better place. I rant in the morning, don't I?

To each his (or her) own. Who are we to judge another? I believe in living our life as we feel it should be, and if it doesn't measure up to someone elses expectations, well... so be it.

A very good poem, Ann. And much food for thought.

    Dear Ann,
Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! I thoroughly commend the credo you express in this poem.
If the human race evolves sufficiently to rise above racial intolerance, bigotry and superficiality there may be less reason for all the protests, riots, conflicts and senseless bloodshed and destruction that marks present generations.
I hope that everyone who reads your poem also reads the comment of touchof1der which I applaud as I do your poem.
Thankyou for writing and sharing this.
    Love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

Thank you for writing this. People need to know how bad things are really in the world today. It really spoke to me.
"Does it make them so unworthy,
to be part of this human race?
they should hold their heads in pride,
to look the world straight in its face."
Was my favirote line. Keep writing like this and I may add you to my list of favirots! Keep it up!

prejudice... what a difficult subject to write about!
the list goes on to include social status, weight, physical disabilities... an endless list.
i admire this poem for the message it sends. be a write little or big, good or bad... if it sends an important message so be it
this is done with style and class and i respect that!

our differences are our blessings indeed. Very nice concepts here although I must say it didn't touch me on a deeper level. The rhyming scheme you used made it seem too lighthearted for my taste. I respect that there are different styles out there, though. Good job!

    Thankyou Kimberly,
It just annoys me all the predjudice there is in the world today,
If a person is black, white, green, gay, bi or transexual. what does it matter.. well. I know to me it makes no difference.
I also feel for those who are prejudiced against in the fact it makes them feel the need to speak out so hardn in defence of the prejudices against them.
Why can't we all live alongside one another and accept people as being people.
It's how it should be. from the day of birth till death.

Unfortunately it will never happen. and that is what I find so sad.

Amen!! Loving someone doesn't necessarily mean that you "endorse" or even agree with their lifestyle. it simply means, "Hey, I accept you as you are!" And if you cannot accept a person as they are, warts, flaw, differences, idiosyncrasies and all... who is really the lessor person? If we were all created the same, what would be the fun or interest in that? Since we are all only accountable for the life we each live, how another chooses to live theirs should not be the main concern. I have an African American sister, by adoption. She is 50 years old, only dates white men in their 30;s and write Christian themed poetry... I on the other hand lean toward older white me and write erotica which she will not even read. We have riot explaining to people that I am the black sheep of the family. We have seen a lot of prejudice and still do. I get strange looks when I have her grandkids for a day or something and we go shopping. People who stop and actually turn their heads all the way around are the ones I just really want to throw a brick at. I love the way you have spoken here lady! And now you know something else about me!!
    ♥ Kimberly
