God Bless Our Sailors

Missing image
They are dedicated sailors,
the bravest and the best,,
they sail the seven seas,
seeking freedom's quest.

They  sail far from home,
live many months at sea,
protecting their homeland,
protecting you and me.

Far away from loved ones,
no longer in civilian life,
these dedicated sailors ,
deal with stress and strife

Living on the battleships,
destroyers, gunboats too,
some dive in a submarine,
beneath the ocean blue.

Sailors man the turrets,
keep vigil for their enemy,
looking for safe harbor,
from the unforgiving sea.

Their eyes on the horizon,
waves crash stem to stern
vigilant,  they keep watch
their minds full of concern.

Sailors use their muscles,
they work out everyday,
loved ones are left behind,
as they say anchors away.

When you see a sailor,
go up and shake his hand,
honor him when you see,
him safely back on land.

Hi Robin, Thank you for the nice comment. I didn't promote it , someon else did. The person I wrote it for. He is in the Navy and I wrote from my heart I wasn't worried how it sounde or rhymed. Sometimes poetry is conveying feelings only and form, rhyme, or flow don't matter to the writer or to the one the poem is meant for. Take care and hope you have a wnderful day over there. Sandy

    Hi Sandy,
I don't think this is the greatest poem you've ever written, in that the rhythm is not great, it's a little clumsy in places, however, one cannot disagree with the sentiment.
My father, grandfather and great grandfather were all in The Royal Navy (the Senior Service as we call it here), so the poem is pertinent to me (I was the odd one out and joined the Royal Air Force).
I ALWAYS put money in the charity boxes provided for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution - it's amazing that so many organisations here in the UK, doing tremendous social work, are not funded by the government.
Anyway, well done for highlighting this.....
    All the best,
    Robin.

Wonderful poem! My dad used to be a sailor in the Navy during the Vietnam War and he has told me of all that goes on, but I imagine it must be harder now, too. I loved your rhyming and your flow. Very awesome job! God bless!

    not bad

This is a nice poem. I wouldn't say it's a great poem, but it is special because of the subject matter. It's true that sailors have a difficult and dangerous job more often than not, especially in this age of terrorism and jingoism.

Very nice! The entire poem seemed to fit and flow together very nicely. This is a wonderful tribute. It makes me proud to be an American when I think of all of the people serving in the military are putting their lives on the line for this country. Thank you for reminding me what all of these people have done for us. This was a truly beautiful piece.

    Brilliance TRUE GOLD

~sandygram you have a heartbeat and soul of the Lords timeless grace~
I read and reread every word you penned so elegantly and you set me free
You had me on the boat sailing with the sailors on the seven seas of destiny
Listen to the beauty you share, here, there, and everywhere,
Oh its true we deeply need to honour these brave young men and women
Who give their lives each and everyday, so we can live in shadows of freedom
Once again, your stunning grace is shining down upon my face
I can see that you’re a natural songwriter; you have the beat sing to all of humanity
You have a timless gift to share forevermore, upon the sun moon stars we seek
Let the wings of the Divines Lords' Heavenly inner peace eternally sail free
And God Bless all of us and Bring Eternal Peace to terras shores to let love be.

You mean so much to me. Our friendship, I cherrish with every beat of my heart!! The words you wrote in this poem is so very true. For I have been away from my family for almost four years. I get to see them like twice a year maybe for like two week periods. It is a joy when I get to go back home because I get treated like a King... In some ways I like that too But this dedication to me and the Navy is just unbelievably amazing!!! I thank You for the way you have honored me with this wonderful and loving poem!! Thank You for your continued devotion to being my friend and trusting me and giving me the opportunity to be a part of your family I gladly accept you as my mom too Just the joy of having you in my life as a friend is an honor and a blessing!! I love every conversation we have, every time we talk on the phone, every song that I sing for you and God, the scriptures. Everything!! Sandy, you have touched my heart far beyond anything you will ever know. And especially after this one... Wow!! You talk about speechless, I just wish I could express in words what this means to me Sandy. All I can say is thank you And I love You!! God Bless You!!
