I Do Not Understand

I could never understand,
Why people have to die.
Murdered over their beliefs,
Because of the god they worship.

Bible, Torah, Koran,
Three books with almost the same words.
Printed versions that are so similar,
Until the birth of one man.

They all speak of a great flood,
Close views on creation.
Of a profit that freed the slaves of Egypt,
Too many similarities to list.

Only the bible speaks of a man named Jesus,
The others do not acknowledge.
All I know is millions have been destroyed,
For holy wars fought over his existence.

I can not understand why this could happen,
If he gave his life for our sins.
Why do people kill for him,
It says thou shall not kill.

If somehow not another,
Drop of blood was spilled.
Why does it happen,
Against his will.

If the people that kill each other,
Would read each book.
Then maybe we would be able,
To live in peace and harmony.

To accept each others beliefs,
Respect every ones faith.
Maybe just maybe,
We could save the human race.

Author notes

This is just how I feel about peoples beliefs and faiths.  Respect each other and maybe we have a chance in this crazy world.

    good job

Interesting write. I've written similar things myself. There is no LOGICAL reason for the followers of any religion to hate the followers of another (except ignorance and bigotry, of course). The problem is that Christians, as a group, mostly know very little about the Bible, and pick and choose whatever justifies the things they want to do. I have known fundies (Christian) who believe the Bible was written in English, and who dislike Jews simply because of Christ being crucified, despite the fact that he was crucified by Romans. Pilate bore the ultimate blame, hand-washing or not. He could have said no and there would have been nothing the Jews could have done about it. As far as the other peoples of the Book, the Moslems and Jews, they have all twisted its words to suit themselves, and will continue to do so. I even wrote a poem along these lines called "The People Of The Book". Perhaps I will dig it out someday and post it. The point is that you have a good point and you wrapped the whole thing up very well. The last line is a classic and I've used it myself as have others I've read over the years. However you did very well on this, even though it could use a bit of polishing up. Prophet, not profit, by the way. Good job.

Good points made in this piece. My rationale for why so many beliefs share similarities (AND I HAVE A RIGHT TO MY OPINION) is that they are all manmade, and man has shared a similar existence.
At any rate, religion does one good thing for man: some way or another it teaches us morals. So, I do like your ending about combining the books to save the human race.
Good job, and good luck in the contest!

    excellent

I never will understand why it is that people all basically believe in the same thing.. One higher power, but yet.. ppl kill over it.. just because they didnt take out the time to understand their religion enough to learn that their religions are all the same. Good poem.. Good way of showing how ppl all overlook such aspects.. Excellent job.. Good luck in the contest.

Everyone has their own religion...they are all different yet the same...people should be allowed ot believe in whatever they want to believe in...anyhow...excellent piece! Very controversial piece.
