Would you be surprised?

Sitting in
a bright lecture theatre
Listening to a monologue
about
Queering Femininity
and the Woman in the Red Dress
I look around

I wonder, how many people
Would be surpised
If I put my arm around you
And leaned in and kissed you
On the cheek

Would you?

Author notes

I saw this awesome monologue, at the suggestion of the girl I love, called "The Woman in the Red Dress", by Anna Camilleri. She's a really cool author who writes about the lesbian experience. There were a lot of other lesbians there, but also a lot of people I knew from class (the special presentation was part of their class). And all I wanted to do was put my arms around the girl I love - she doesn't know I love her. I wish she did.

Here's Anna Camilleri's site, for those interested. Her performance was brilliant! http://www.annacamilleri.com/

Also, this piece needs a way better title.

Great piece! It's short but sweet. I think you should tell the girl how you feel, it's better to have her know than to regret never telling her!! Besides, what have you got to lose? But anyways, great job, keep up the awesome work, and give some thought to the title, a name will come to you sooner or later!

Thank you for the introduction to Anna Camilleri, I have heard of her before but never read any of her work. I think that I intended to but ended up moving it to the back burner for awhile. This poem is touching. I wish that there were a way to help you, and I wish I had some real advice to give you.

I have confidence that you will find the way. If you two are as close as I think that you are then perhaps she already has some idea about your feelings. It is very hard to hide the light of love in your eyes, ecspecially when the one you are looking at is the one that holds your heart. I hope that it works out. I hope that you get what you've been waiting so long for.

On a more critical note, I have to say that I agree about the title though.
