The Ivy Covered Walls

 IVY COVERED WALLS

There was a place long ago of magic and wonder
High ivy covered walls held the secret within
Stone walls surround an old abandoned castle
What hides inside is where this adventure begins

The king was a kindly man who spoke so gently
He fell in love with a maiden working at the inn
Their love was forbidden but he still loved her so
Meeting secretly the maiden fell in love with him

It use to be full of life and so much laughter
In flower gardens music would always fill the air
The king never would marry his sweetheart
Lived alone, when the king died he had no heirs

The gates were closed, the castle left empty
Gardens wilted and died, without any love
The ivy on the walls covered everything over
You could only see the castle  from up above

One day a peasant walked near the old castle
Found the gate, pushed it open, went inside
Found two headstones marking two old graves
The king and the girl he wanted for his bride

In death the king buried with his only true love
King's true love by his side, never more alone

Peasant cleared the graves of overgrown ivy
Single red rose bloomed near the headstones

Oh Sandy, how sad a story, bringing tears... a beautiful write... they are together forever as evident by the single rose... I love the picture! You did it, so glad he showed you how! I just realized we were in the same contest, Nicolette told me about it this morning and I just had to enter even though I didn't have much time today, no prewrites, this is exquisite! A winner my friend, I adore it when you write these amazing heart touching tales. All the best in the contest, and God bless my friend, Annie
