If I Ruled the World Today

I think that if I ruled the world I’d tremble all the time.
Could I stop the wars, the hate, eliminate all crime?
Could I gain respect and love from all those who I’d rule,
Would I be a kindly king, or power hungry fool?

Should I make a ton of laws and force them to obey?
Should I tax them to the hilt, make everybody pay?
Should I spy on everyone, create a KGB?
Should I know who's on my side, and which ones disagree?

Now, I thought to rule the world was SURE to be such fun,
Rich like all the Russian czars, loved by everyone.
That won’t happen in this life, the world’s not ready yet
To have a ruler just like me, but I can’t forget

All the thoughts I had today of peace and love and joy,
Equality for everyone, a hope I could destroy
All that ruins lives today, the hatred fear and pain.
If I ruled the world right now, I think I'd go insane.

Author notes

Interesting thought - to rule the world.  Not sure I'd want to be there/do that.

    good

I appreciated that you fixed my poem & responded so quickly and i enjoyed this poem very much. I concur with the last line. It also shows vulnerability of the auther perhaps that you are humble. I like that too.

lol at the last line, it added a bit of light hearted humor to what seemed a thoroughly serious poem.
the rhyme and flow, as usual, (lol) is great.
this one is very easy to read.
I have a suggestion, I think in line one of stanza three, it would improve the flow to use the word 'sure' instead of 'going'.

anyway, great job and good luck on the contest.

This is so nice. Such rhyme. Such rhythm. Every line just right. I agree with all staid above: We should remember how tough the job is, before we judge our rulers. I also agree with Maureen above who said: that she would like to see the world ruled by someone like you, and if not you, someone who cares. I agree wholeheartedly.

    excellent

I liked this poem, and it's true. Ruling the world would be a huge responsibility and not one that I would want. I know that there are many more competent people that would fill the office better than i could ever do. I think we should remeber how tough it would be before we judge our rulers. A lot of the time it is easy for us to say things; because we don't think about what we would do if we were put in that position. Thanks for making me think. I am glad i don't have the responsibility of ruling the world

Paul, I'd vote for you anytime! You are not only a very dear man, but you are also a truly wonderful poet. I think you're right to pass up the job, but if you ever do decide to go for it, you can count on my support! Hugs, Patricia ♥

Wow!!! Impressive thinking, emotion, and logic. I don't think most of us are ready or good enough for this. I loved everything in here, I feel you did an exceptional job playing me as a whining Queen LOL
    Good job

I wouldn't want to rule the world but I would like to see it ruled by someone like you (if not you), i.e., someone who cares!

    Great poem..enjoyed the read!

Wow. This is not what I had in mind. I thought people who chose this option would try to be humorous and you have to go and give me something powerful This was well structured with an excellent flow. There was a lot of depth in your ideas. It was intense. I am not sure I would want to rule the world either, I'm already insane This was excellent. I'm so glad you chose to enter.

The reason you would go insane would be because this world was not meant to be ruled by a righteous man.man can't bring peace to a world that he has flung into chaos. You,my dear are just to special for this world.you would have to be given a fresh world and with you as ruler it would also be special.great write as usual.

You make a excellent point. I really enjoyed this read. Your words were so very true. I find it sad that no matter how badly we need it. No one will be able to come in and fix all the problems. People are people and many disagree. I have hope for the future though. That's all any of us can have.

Dad, I loved this. I think everyone else would go insane if I ruled the world. LOL! What do you think? Anyways, this was cute and the thought of no war, crime and hate is such a great thought. I love that idea, though it's very farfetched. Great job, once again. Good luck in the contest.
