A Dog's Life

puppylarge.gif puppy large picture by SunshineUK

Sixteen years, now almost seventeen,
I've played at stick and ball, stayed seldom still
until good master's call would whistle shrill
to lead me back - no need to smack.  Sight keen.

Sixteen years tail's wagged as faithful friend,
as boon companion, running round fun years.
His mother passed away, I shared the tears
that fountained forth and never seemed to end.

Sixteen years round each revolving moon
from hearth and home I pick up slightest sound,
ears prick, eyes bright, in sight I'm always found
to hold my ground, though often play buffoon.

Sixteen years, come rain or shine, we walk
twice, sometimes thrice a day, I sense each smell
around the house, know friends and rascals well,
and after dinner hear the table talk.

Sixteen years from pet to family,
from playful pat to priceless kith and kin,
I vet as threat who'd twins' affections win,
can smell a rat or chase cat up a tree.

Sixteen years I've watched the children grow,
suffered unruly hands that now caress,
I guard them still, still at the same address,
as I will willing till my turn to go.

Sixteen years saw summers shedding hair,
saw autumns' colours charm birds from the trees,
saw winter whiteness whose bare branches' frieze
prepared for springs unbounded, weather fair.

Sixteen years, milk - nap - home-made pap brew,
from toothless start, heart full, until depart,
toothless, heart filled beyond all man may chart,
life's cycle spins till ready to renew.

Sixteen years that gambolled life away,
with water, beef and bone, I’ve played at will.
Scents seem less sharp today, and soon I will
make my last bow - still in thrill dreams I play !

My sister just lost her yellow lab to cancer so this was challenging to read through the tears that sought to sting my eyes. I like how you chose to write from the dog's perspective and showed the pup to old dog. Nice job here! Very nice!

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i still remember a dog we had. i wasn't even two when we got her as a puppy. when we lived in south carolina (born there, military moved us to california when i was about four), we had some woods beyond our fence. the snakes who lived there would sometimes come into our yard, so mom never let my younger brother and i go beyond this one tree, if we did (hey we were little kids), boo boo (i named her, by accident) would grab the back of our shorts or pants and gently drag us back to the other side of the tree! she came down with cancer when i was twelve or thirteen and we had no choice but to put her down

    Wonderous Write!

My pal of 17 years and nine months passed away Aug. 17 2008. He is greatly missed. I still have three canine companions. Two don't get along so I'm looking for a new home for one of them. But in all honesty I doubt life would be worth it were it not for my woofs. Just having them around keeps me around, I guess.

When Daimon could no walk I knew it was the end, and for weeks before I had seen the weary sadness in his eyes... anyway... I'm sure he's a puppy again somewhere... hopefully a better one than this.

  • aww this is cute! I loved this! the pictures were adorable. this was great! BRAVO! good luck in the contest.

  • I'd first like to say, I loved the pictures, they were the kind that made me smile and say aww bless, like I do when my Springer is sleeping, when shes like that it makes me wonder how people can hurt them, I would never be able to hurt a dog. dogs so this poem really reached out to me. This poem is the kind of poem that made me smile all the way through and feel a warmth inside me. "Sixteen years I've watched the children grow,
suffered unruly hands that now caress,
I guard them still, still at the same address" This is my favourite part, it just really stands out, how that when the children are small they have unruly hands and prod and poke, but as time goes on they learn to caress and pet the dog nicely. The last stanza was very sad. I hate it when dogs die. You really did what the title says, you captured a dogs life in a poem.

Great write keep up the good work and thank you for entering my contest

K9s are truly loyal companions. You really defined this in your poem. 16 years. Very beautiful.

His fur so soft - muffle children's tears
Stand guard all night or tail wagging play
    Loyalty increasing day by day
Until the end of sixteen years

Just a little thought that came to mind for the ending, but of course yours is just as fine. It must've been a sorrowful event at the dog's death scene.

    Remember, never stop writing!

Beautiful poetry. I loved the whole thing. I have two dogs, and one recently passed away due to stomach worms. Dogs are man's best friend and my German Shepard was the sweetest girl in the world. This poem reminded me of her.

  • Sooooo good!

Dogs are wonderful creatures! I've always had at least one sometimes three. Your work epitomizes the life of a family pet so well. I had a golden put down 2 months ago, and I cried like a baby! BTW, the oldest recorded living age of a dog is 28, she was a beagle.

The use of repition in each first line worked well and I liked the observation 'sight keen' but would have preferred a follow-on that mentioned failing sight later in the piece; after all, not only the sense of smell would diminish would it?
I'm unsure about 'Sixteen years tail's' why the possessive with no focus? Aren't the 'tails of sixteen years' a plural instead?
    Minor points all.
The dog-point-of-view works well to endear and the somewhat simplistic world view pays homage to the simple life of a dog.

Well, although maybe not helpful, i give this poem 10/10 for its topic. I adore dogs. But what i really like about this poem is how it highlights all typical aspects of a dogs life in a unique and fres way. I truly feel as if i know this dog now. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful story with us. Kepp up the good work. As mentioned before the rhyme scheme could be better, but i dont see it as enough of an issue to detract from the experience. So 10/10 still stands.

The pictures are adorable, and I can really feel how you (or should I say your dog?) feel. The rhyme scheme was a little bit shakey but I couldn't stop reading it because I liked the story so much. Even with a sad ending I still think it was a happy poem and more of a celebration of a good life that was lived well. I give your poem a 9/10. I'm glad you wrote this from an animals perspective because it seems like the lives and feelings of animals are becoming more and more neglected in today's society. Thank you for posting this, I think everyone should read it, I predict that I will be refering to this poem in the near futer, seeing as I havr a 16-17 year old (people years) dog that is about to die.

Yo, it was nice and a normal tribute. The beginning was a bit boring but gradually got better. I liked that you took in a different point-of-view which is interesting but its just about a normal dog. I liked the end the most, it was the most heartfelt part. I think the end showed that animals and people are similar and age affects both. The imagery was great and the picture at the top was a perfect first impression for this poem, the picture at the end fitted perfectly with everything. Thanks for entering in my shizz.
