Golden is the boy that bends
For money and the upturned fork
Brave is the young man that groans
Under the saber of curiosity
To stock up more beans and butter
For winters ahead flashing like
Spent bulb, and blown-curtain-sun
Dashed upon plastic Malibu surf rocks
Pregnant, shamed, and quite possibly
Unable to walk home.
In 6th grade we asked my best friend Chris's
Older brother Mark (A pigeon chested menthol
Smoking long hair) How we would know that we
Were hitting puberty? To which he replied
'Stick a tampon up your ass, count to a 100,
and then pull it out real fast, if there's
blood on it you're getting close.'
Thinking back now, I can only laugh...
Brilliant.

Surprised me
The thing that carried this off for me is the way the rich images and metaphor in the first stanza made me wonder if you were saying something really deep about society. I found out what it really meant in the second stanza, and the total absence of any sort of segue before plunging headlong into plain-speech adolescent boy lore provoked a chuckle. Quite enjoyable. -

This poem had me ROTFL!!!!I don't think I have read your poetry before, but I am sure glad that I clicked on this one.I am still laughing as I type, at the vision of that boy, pulling the tampon out of his butt!!!!!Best of luck in this contest!
