A Different Breed

As a child you adore your parents.
They seem to understand your woes completely...
Well, until you learn how to talk legibly with them.
Time seems an eternity, yet you're aging like crazy
Suddenly the knowledge of the world is yours!
"Slow down," they gently warn, but they just don't know anything.
Finally it's HS and you're counting the days till legality.
You're barley around anymore; sick of being told how to live.
After all times have changed! They're out-of-date now...right?
All the sudden it's over, where did the time go?
You're getting ready for the college experience,
But now you have to leave the luxury of the home you once avoided.
Without regard time continues to spin forward.
You find life's not easy, but something deep inside helps out.
We're all born with the instinct to succeed right? Or..nah, couldn't be...
Soon you're in love! It is indeed wonderful.
Unfortunately the story books didn't account for "oopsies".
You grit your teeth and bear it. Wait this seems familiar...
Laughing on the phone you find yourself surprised.
It worked! The baby calmed and went straight to sleep.
Maybe they know just a thing or two yet.
The once eternal time clock mocks you as it speeds through life.
Your baby just doesn't get it, you've made the mistakes,
It's not like you were born yesterday!
Suddenly it hits you! Did it take them this long?
They never expect you to completely listen,
They just hope some of it got stuck in the ear wax coming out.
Parents and children seem a different breed,
Both seemingly knowing more than the other,
Yet in the end they're not so different after all.

Author notes

Was up all night last night so I wrote some stuff. I forgot my notebook at home that I'd written it in so my bf read it to me over the phone. I think some things may be off..so I'll fix it next time I'm home.

That is such a very vaild remark. You have put a great deal of thought into this piece, and it really did show. Kudos to you.

I understand the voice of this piece and think that the opening lines really do forecast the way in which this poem will go. Your topic is literal and yet it comes from a true place that is really showing the reader something about yourself - an opinion you wish to express and an experience that is truly yours. Tony.
