The Harlequin's Ruthless Pantomime

A many colored fool of dark demeanor

            in mischievous pantomime

            wears a twisted mask and

            is the lover of Columbine.

            His costume speaks

            of dark perverse slaughter

and under, a character sick and cruel

            playing out a murder

in a silent, pitiless, ruthless pantomime.

            The soundless performance

evoked a noiseless hush as I watch

unwary of the evil that lay inside

the shadowy mind of the pantomime.

Obscure and indistinct his intentions were
vague and blurry my mind became
his purpose and meaning slowly evolved
behind his murky eyes already insane
and his baton, used to bash the others at will,
he nervously hides from me as my eyes
are drawn to it in a hideous, uncontrollable thrill.

His gloomy and sinister dance seized my feelings

and tortured me with a disturbing, ominous end.

I want to flee, and with this have no more dealings

but his wild dance sensed it and drew to a sudden conclusion

and his surreal tongue swiftly mesmerizing

summoned me to stay, and my leaden feet would not move.

callous, brutal, cold eyes of victory
glared with an unholy glee through the unwholesome mask
glancing askance at I, the next mark.
The castle gate slowly squealed shut
Helplessly I watched, transfixed in horror
as the candles in the hall at once went dark.

Author notes

............the central word is "fright"

Not many people are not going to be familiar with the story of Harlequin, Columbine and Pierrot and their love triangle, and it's ironic that a high school with the same name suffered a dark tragedy... my Columbine is the character here, not that dark act at that school. Yes, pure irony.

WoW! I don't even know what else to say here. This was has caught me totally offguard. I am not at all familiar with this and now you have me thirting to know more. I am going to have to look this up and do a little on the side research. I find this quite fascinating. You're such a good teacher. May I be excused now? Good luck in the contest!
