Survivor

Move on
Move along
Once a soldier
Now nothing more
Than a shell
I see the desperation
But know they will not beg
And even if they did
We are bound

By duty or
By fear
It doesn’t matter
Pale blue eyes
Weighed down
By knowledge
And under-eye circles
Bodies shying away
From my touch

She stares
She cries
But I can’t face her
Hand that washed me
As a child
The arms I clung to
After a nightmare
Long before any
Of this began

Move on
Move along
No longer human
Forcing bodies into place
Just bodies
Not humans
Humanity has left
Us
Alone

Not thinking
Not feeling
Work is done
I retreat into darkness
Thinking of our victims
Bothered most by
The children
My people
My mother

Author notes

I wrote this thinking of the Jewish men who were forced to work as guards at concentration camps.  Many were chosen by their community to be the "survivor" and tell the world about what happened.  These men were to stay alive at all costs and many put their own loved ones into the gas chambers.  Responding to #3, but you probably got that.
