I'm a mum, a wood puzzle restorer and an education assistant at a school for disabled kids. Born in rural Somerset, England, I emigrated to Australia at 21 to discover the joys of freedom and to start attempting to be responsible (still learning that one...)...my first paradox, perhaps?
Having been sent to boarding school, I guess my life-long love affair with words came about through letter writing ~ our only contact with the outside world, family and friends. I soon discovered that the longer and more interesting the letters you sent out, the longer and more interesting letters you got in return. I ended up firing off missives of eight and nine double-sided foolscap pages towards the latter half of my education! It must have taken the recipients almost a week to read them.
As for the story-telling that appears in much of my poetry ~ well, that can be attributed to having two brothers, and competing in the joke-telling sessions in the pub! Again, it was a matter of discovery ~ the more you honed the wording and punch-lines, the greater the appreciation of the listeners and the louder the laughs.
My favourite contemporary poet is the ever-clever Pam Ayres. I love her down-to-earth humour, and the fact that we can all relate to her poetry.
As for my stuff, well, it is what it is. Not for everyone, especially the more serious-minded folk. I write my poetry with performance in mind, and have begun to do hour-long readings around the northern suburbs of Perth (for MONEY! Woo-hoo!)
I love to see people laugh ~ and strive, through my writing, to achieve that simple goal in life.
Yours in giggles, Lou.
