In silence and tears,
Half broken-hearted
To sever for years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold,
Colder thy kiss;
Truly that hour foretold
Sorrow to this.
The dew of the morning
Sunk chill on my brow--
It felt like the warning
Of what I feel now.
Thy vows are all broken,
And light is thy fame;
I hear thy name spoken,
And share in its shame.
They name thee before me,
A knell to mine ear;
A shrudder comes o'er me--
Why wert thou so dear?
They know not I knew thee,
Who knew thee so well--
Long, long I shall rue thee,
Too deeply to tell.
In secret we met—
In silence I grieve,
That thy heart could forget,
Thy spirit deceive
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee?--
With silence and tears.

I thought that this poem was deeply touching in every single way. I liked the rhyme pattern (a,b,a,b) it fit well with the poem which made it flow nicely. Very touching and heartfelt. I enjoyed this even though it was pretty sad indeed.

the poem is great!it is passionate, emotional and heart-rendering.the tragedy of this excellent poem is that it could have been more improved.that is to say,it could have been made immortal had byron not included the specific reference to his love. -

In Secret We Met

I was 12 when I first found this poem. A girl of 12 crushing on another girl. So confusing. I noticed at the time that gender was not applied in this poem and it was 'in secret we met'. "Thy spirit deceive". I have noticed many responders to this poem have assumed opposite sex roles....but think about it in same gender roles...."How shall I greet thee? With silence and tears." -
Love Disrespected
From guest Golden (contact)
I love in this poem the sentiment that he carries with him. He laments the love lost, but mostly he grieves the disrespect his lover shows to their past love. He pains at the mention os his lover's name in situation that speak ill of their love's memory since "Thy vows are all broken, And light is thy fame". His memories are pure, but her "light fame" now has stained what he cherished so deep and he agonizes how he will behave were he to meet her again. Just beautiful... -

another view of this
From guest laura (contact)
I was studying this for my GCSE course and found a slightly different view to it and although i try to shake it i cant seem to believe it any other way now. what if the women in this poem has just died. the first stanza could be them braking up and the second he starts feeling unwell like he knows some how deep down that somethings wrong . it all makes perfect sense the use of the word knell especially a knell is a solemn bell rung at funerals or after someone dies the question thats answer is a decider of what this poem is actually about is was the knell used in a mental sense or as a physical object. -

This is so very touching that i was unable to hold my emotions .....Tears kept rolling as i read each para .... the question at the end of this marvelous poem left me thinking as to what can be the answer ....each word has so much to say .. I wish Byron would have given an answer to his question ..... -

Favorite lines: Long, long shall I rue thee, too deeply to tell" and "In silence I grieve, that thy heart could forget". Such grief cannot be forgotten, unless it was never truly felt in the first place. Only the author 'knows' this grief and he speaks to it so well. "How shall I greet thee? With silence and tears". The love is not gone from him, only now, it causes pain instead of joy. I have always loved Byron. -
When we two parted
From guest Dan Negrut (contact)
I have discovered this poem as a student and I have kept it with me over the years first on a piece of paper that becam shredded with time, the I have carried it in my heart and in my mind. I think it is a poem speaking about unity and separation within the couple, about the overwhelming silence of the couple which has experienced the death of emotion pointed from the very first stanza by the silence and the tears. What are tears if not the external manifestation of inner grief, of dying love ? It is a poem vacillating painfully between past and present, between despair and hope. The dew of the morning in the second stanza (highly antiromantic element by the way) comes to be symbolically associated with the tears in the first stanza. Whereas the lover in the first stanza cries his tears for the death of emotion, the dew could be interpreted as the symbolical tears the morning cries for the death of night. Night, on the other hand, is the time preferred by the romantics, as it is a time of passion, of love and sin, whereas morning brings about Law, morality, understanding and clarity (sunk chill on my brow). The rest of the poem... some other time. If you are interested in my opinion, contact me. -
I never quite liked Byron as much as everyone else around me. I always thought I knew the reason, but recently I began to doubt that. This poem made me change my mind ... and heart. I'm not for such poetry but this is without a doubt one of the deepest and truest poems ever written.
The best in this poem are the lines from 29 to 32.
Why? If ever you should expirience that, you will understand ... -

secret-silence and grieve to tears. -
This poem by Byron is most likely my favorite. It shows so much emotions, especially sadness. I know that anyone with a broken heart feels the same way, and Byron used his skill to put it in pen.
-
melted my soul
I felt like i was living his sadness, this is poetry.
total brilliance. -
one of Lord Byron's best poems. emotional.
-
I want to say more about this piece, because I feel my last comment did it no justice. I use this poem as my killer in speech (yeah, me a killer in speech-ha, but it has given me my 1's). I love the emotion that the words bring, and the different ways I can minipulate the flow and rythem. The words and descriptions are set-up in a way that leaves much room for interpertation on how to read it; I love that. And I feel kind of glum when I read this, for love can cause that feeling very easily:
"In secret we met-
In silence I grieve"
Those are some powerful words- it's heartbreaking kind of... I love this poem with a passion, and like I said before, 'suggest it to everyone!!!' -
This might be my favorite poem to read, especially out-loud. The words of Lord Byron are so well put that the emotion is easy to find and express. This is poetry at it's finest; suggest it to all!
-
" They knew not who knew thee, who knew thee so well.." these great words of this classic poem have rung in my memory, and one of the reasons for my great love affair with poetry.
Love Byron -
"In secret we met--
In silence I grieve,
That thy heart could forget,
Thy spirit deceive
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee?--
With silence and tears."
This is indeed a very nice emotional expression_____ with silence and tears, but some thing more I would like to add._______ with LOVE, an everlasting ecstasy.
-
It's wonderful how Byron fits so much in those tense, short lines. A great poem. Just imagine someone's kiss going cold on your lips... And it would not be the same without the lyrical form.
-
I have been in love with the poem titled, "when we two parted..." by the famous poet of the 18th century, Lord George Byron. This is by far the deepest, warmest, coldest poem I have ever read or even heard about. Everyone should read this and sit and think on it for awhile and you'll see what I mean.
-
I loved this one excellet write!

This has been one of my favorite poems for years....
