Samuel Newton Berryhill was a firm believer in states' rights. A teacher, writer, and editor of a newspaper called The Columbus Democrat in Columbus, Mississippi, from 1875-1880, he was also a poet, whose 1878 "Backwoods Poems" earned him the nickname the "Backwoods Poet." . Some of his poems have been included in classical works of Southern literature.
