George Essex Evans (1863 - 1909), poet, was born in London on 18th June 1863. His father, John Evans, Q.C., who was for five years a member of the House of Commons, died when George was only a few months old. His schooldays were spent in Wales and in Jersey, and when he was 17 years of age he emigrated to Queensland, australia, settling in the rural City of Toowoomba
