illipenandpaper on March 19, 2004hmmm...I just commented on your poem...please don't comment on mine. I write poems, or 'works' as it probably is, which I'm not really all that proud about. They have that shitty rhyming scheme that 99% I hate as well...They also have a lot of teenage 'i hate myself' angst which I also hate. So to summarise...I don't ACTUALLY like what I write, but I figure, what the hell...I'm not gonna get shot for submitting them. I'm new to all this and I hope from posting shit poems I might eventually evolve into posting good, 'applaude' worthy poems (not just applaudes from 13 year old kids who can relate to it coz they're parents pissed them off...)
I like what FaceValue said...It's changes my views on a lot of shit...I love your poetry...I'd like to aspire to write like this...but I guess it all just takes time, eh...
Oh well...Anyways, that's pretty much all I gotta say. -
mjkisjesus on March 8, 2004wow. you're by far one of the most intelligent people here on allpoetry. like you stated, a good deal of "writers" couldn't speak of the difference between prose and poetry. you got a head on your shoulders, so you sure can.

FaceValue on March 8, 2004Cars require an engine, a transmission, and wheels if they are expected to run.
Poetry is no different
In order to geton the road, poetry requires an engine (METER), a transmission (RHYME), and wheels (foot). All that needs to wrapped around 1) knowledge, and 2) feelings. Without these things, ya got prose - by definition.
Most people on AP don't know poetry from prose. Prose can be formatted to resemble poetry, but poetry, it is not.
I just read about 20 of your prosaics. I didn't see a poem in there - prose only. Nothing wrong in that - prose can be killer, properly done, and you have some excellent words in here, packed with feeling, obviously expeienced.
Forced rhyme is junk. "poetry" without meter is shoddy.
Both stick out like a sore ass.
The majority of these writers scribble down some
words, post it, and walk off. These things are called
"works" because good poetry is hard work. it has to be
cleaned up before going to the ball. Most of what I see
has torn sleeves and tattered hemlines with scuffed shoes -
Not taking time to bathe before the dance. Good prose is no
different. It takes a little work to make thoughts flow into
one river, moving towards one ocean.
Before a "poet" calls himself a "poet", it might be a good
idea to learn a little about meter, rhyme, and foot.
Writers write prose, poets write poetry.
A good poet, a good writer, write because they must write.
What others have to say, makes no difference.
That doesn't mean the writer has the right to change
the definition of poetry / prose because he "feels" some
special way. Poetry isn't a "whatever" thing. That's what's
wrong now - free verse, haiku, and short stories chopped up
to resemble poetry - the anything goes thinking. Well, anything
doesn't go.
*No More then Meets the Eye* is one of the better prosaics I
have seen on the site. Why? It speaks solid and undeniable
TRUTH, wrapped around strong feelings - Well Done.
Remember, when others don't really know, all thay have to
offer is "what I think, and what I feel" - this is straight
hogwash. What is, IS. What they think, is varied, and has
no basis.
Sorry for the long discourse - got a little ticked about the
subject matter but,
You are absolutely right about trite words, forced rhyme, and
shitty poems - couldn't agree more. I would like to add that
way beyond that, there is a whole lot more shitty prose out
there that is being touted as "poetry" by "writers" who can't
\tell you the difference between poetry and prose -
and if they could, couldn't write a lick of acceptable poetry.
If you write prose, anything goes.
*You..... should NOT stop writing*
