Verses about Our Paradise Duck pair, Darby and Joan and their various broods of ducklings in the Beckenham Park ponds.
Angelica shares my love of these beautiful birds and my admiration for their constancy to each other and their exemplary parenting skills.
Normally a pair of 'parries' will raise 2 to 4 ducklings each year but ours have raised between 11 and 15 successfully during the past five years.

This morning dawned, though cloudy, clear and fair;
I hastened to my wonted pond-side seat, -
On my accustomed daily walk
along the Heathcote riverside -
I went again today to check upon my ducklings,
now there are twelve of the original thirteen. -
I wonder why they haven’t joined their children, as they should
but I’m happy that they’ve found this place of refuge here for good. -
Beside the pond he stands alone
to guard his nesting wife. -
There are of course, two ponds in Beckenham Park,
with lawn between, a hundred yards apart. -
I removed my hat in veneration there
and, for a moment, stood in silent prayer..... -
It was crowded in the chapel yesterday
as friends and all the local neighbourhood gathered...
-
Although in life, the smallest of them all,
here, in this angel’s arms he now stands tall. -
Our ducks we love so much as you can see
Sometimes I wish they’d come and stay with me. -
Here you can clearly see Darby and Joan
standing guard over ducklings they’ve reared on their own.
