"41 cent agony" kicks off the story told by "john" who is leaving (or sending) "abigail" on her way for an unknown reason - u decide. the point of this song is obvious, it's about a break up. some relationships just aren't meant to last, and when the end comes it's almost always horrible. this song is about one of those horrible endings. these commentaries will have 2 parts: the first being the story of what is happening and the second being the personal meaning behind the story. there's always a moral at the end.
Chapter 2 of the story introduces the main character, "jack" the bounty hunter. in "a burn instead of beauty" abigail hires this killer, jack - who is reaching the end of his outlaw career when he meets her and is persuaded in many ways and for many reasons to track down and kill "chris", an evil lawman who is accused by abigail of murdering john. she uses everything in her power to convince jack that it's right, and he sets out on one last mission to prove his loyalty to her and to kill once more. on a personal level, this song is about being used and not being able to do much about it other than turning your back or proving yourself to that person. in this case jack goes through with her request no matter what the consequences are.. " i got him in my sights, you want him dead or alive.."
"..end of the world.." is chris' side of the story and his point of view on everything that's happened. he's sophisticated yet extremely unstable and a little insane. he's just as skilled in every way that jack is with a gun, posesses all the talents and abilities as jack. but because he's got a badge, he's got more power and people on his side. apparently chris and abigail have a past and he's obsessed with her, maybe she left him for john? this song is chris' feelings towards john, very hurtful, very threatening and there's no doubt that chris will get his revenge.
Chapter 4 of the reeds mill investigation takes us back to jack, who by now has made the hunt for chris a personal goal. he's transformed from a mature gunslinger nearing the end of his outlaw ways and on the right track, to a very dark and angry killer again. chris, being some form of lawman, has all the skills and training that a lawman should - he may be more clever than jack and possibly even better with a gun, but he doesn't have jack's heart. chris is driven by all the wrong reasons (his obsession with abigail and his hatred for john) where as jack is fueled by his love for abigail and justice for those who deserve it. chris seems to have outdone himself, using his power to do evil and "manhunt" is jack's direct threat and promise to him that his time has come.
personally, this song is about following your heart and following through with what you set out to do, whether it's chasing a dream or making things right with someone - both of which are easy to give up on. putting all your passion, energy and emotions into what you want or what you do and really giving it everything you have.
The first verse of "knight with a six-shooter" is chris snapping at abigail for sending jack after him, and the second verse is his response to jack in "manhunt". chris realizes that he's met his match and is coming to terms with the fact that he will go down. behind the story, this song is spiritual for me - about hitting rock bottom and coming to realize that everything in life is out of your control, handing everything over to god and accepting that.
