Mental Health America is the country’s leading and oldest nonprofit dedicated to helping ALL people live mentally healthier lives. With our more than 300 affiliates nationwide, we represent a growing movement of Americans who promote mental wellness for the health and well-being of the nation – everyday and in times of crisis. In 2009, we will celebrate our 100th year anniversary—a century of mental health advocacy and achievement. We are committed to driving down the tragically high rates and profound impact of mental health and substance use conditions in the United States.
The facts are that over two-thirds of adults and over half of children with a diagnosable mental health condition do not receive the mental health treatment and services they need.
At the same time, people with serious mental illnesses served in the public system die, on average, 25 years early from preventable health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.
Suicide claims the lives of more than 30,000 Americans each year and depression is the leading cause, despite being the most treatable of all mental disorders.
That’s why we’re working to ensure the availability of quality mental health services, increasing public awareness of conditions to combat stigma, and advancing awareness of how important mental health is to our overall health.
Our Resource Center is saving lives and making the difference for thousands of people every day who contact us for help, information and assistance. This year, it responded to nearly 10,000 requests for help personally and close to 2 million requests from individuals who used our web-based resources.
