Wow! I have now mastered how to make this background...one question though, how do I get the rose to stay coloured, mine it has turned grey

How do you get the body tiles muted?

One way is through brightness & contrast.
Or through "lighten" depending on your program, they can have different names.
In "Background Magic" merge a plain white tile with the graphic and save. Or choose the option border bkgrd. and use the tile as the body, it will lighted for you
In sTile, go to colors and then click "lighten" as many times as you want to get the effect.
In paint shop pro go to colors and adjust brightness & contrast
In photoshop go to enhance and then adjust lighting
