I am a curious guy. In both sense of the word. First I am inexorably attracted by things I don’t understand. Second, I do things diametrically opposed. A kind of bipolar behavior. I’ll explain. Although not physically strong, I did triathlon (swimming, biking and running) during 5 years. Between my 50 and 55 years old. Today I do mountain biking. Just now (02/2006) I have a fracture in the left zygomatic arch (that supports my left eye) and considering about a surgery to mend the bone with titanium plates. Results of a bad bike fall. I do sports almost everyday, when I am not injured. From this point of view, I’m an outdoorsman.
Today I am technically retired from my job, but practically, an active researcher and teacher of Civil Engineering.
My main artistic interest is painting. More recently, watercolors. I never lived outside Brazil. I’ve been in USA a couple of times, but just for one or two weeks. I’m not really fluent in spoken English.
Form the intellectual point of view I consider myself very active and curious. I read (present tense) a lot of books, both in Portuguese and English. Sometimes two or three simultaneously (ADVERBS ! BEHAVE  YOURSELVES ! Sorry, but sometimes I can’t control my adverbs. They insist popping up in my head).  

So, why am I here in a site of poetry ? Trying to write in English, a foreign and barbaric language? A language in which the writing process is not phonetically rational? In which you can write the same sound in four or five different ways? In which you write “read” (present tense) and “read” (past tense) and the sounds are different? To be sincere, I don’t know. It is probably a vice. But I am attracted as a moth seeks the light.

And poetry? Why am I attracted to poetry? Simple: I see, feel, and inhale poetry everywhere. In my case, the beautifulness of the world, persons and ideas. The language is the outmost conquest of an animal. And I am very proud of our conquests. And poetry is the super-essence of the spoken communication. From soul to soul, with various possibilities of emotional impact. Over written poetry I only put declaimed poetry or sang poetry. Singing is the outmost expression to communicate emotional feelings.

So, this is the answer: I write poetry because I can’t sing them. But I will try to learn how to declaim poetry.
By the way, does AllPoetry have a place for declaimers? For recitation?

Nice to share this life and this time with you. I am almost 60 years old and still amazed by the world and time I live.
