Beside the river is a riverwalk
and beside the riverwalk
are trees. Birthed by the trees
are birdhouses, also made by
the hands of man, attached high
against trunks. And I ask myself:
what do you leave behind;
what do you make with your hands
that will sustain the chickadees
in winter? I too, make dwellings -
from language. Sawing, cutting,
carving, nailing, that which gives
back to its own along the banks
of still and moving lives.
