Hi I'm Ken

Most of us devote a great deal of our lifetime trying to get money, and quite a lot of time spending it with the hope of making our lives better. Considering how important money is to us, it seems quite strange that we spend almost no time at all in learning how to manage it. Perhaps because money is such a common factor, we tend to assume that learning about it is like learning to walk and talk. Virtually everyone learns to walk and talk, but millions of people face huge problems in their lives because they have made some pretty elementary mistakes in trying to manage their money. Many more millions of people make poor decisions and are worse off as a result.

If you were paranoid, you could easily believe that there is a huge conspiracy to keep us all ignorant. Somebody somewhere will be richer because of the mistakes that others have made, and it is very likely that those who gain will already be much better off than those who lose. The shopper with a store card or credit card who pays the minimum amount each month is giving money to those of us who take about six weeks free credit and then pay off the full amount. It is nearly Christmas and the papers are full of stories about the huge bonuses that many City bankers will be receiving this year. Those bonuses will come largely from pension funds, life insurance companies, and unit trusts, and it is the pensioners, policy holders, and private investors who effectively foot the bill. Whilst it must be said that many people in the City do an excellent job and deserve to be well paid, many others benefit from the lack of basic knowledge on the part of millions of ordinary people.
