Crystal joined me today for her tutoring session. It is frustrating- her inattention, her negativity and her problems with her roommate. I sit there and listen to a saga of an unanchored life. Crystal called back today. She said she had had a huge fight with her room-mate. It was over her daughter. I will be tutoring her tomorrow. She says she is stressed out with the conflicts at home. For the past 4 to 5 weeks I have been tutoring Crystal, a 27-year old mother on welfare. She is a ' learner' in the adult literacy program at the Shasta Library where I volunteer as a mentor. I have been tutoring Crystal since Diwali last month. I signed up as a literacy mentor at the library. Crystal is a 27 year old mother of a five year old girl, on welfare.
