The Thirteen Floor and Existencialism

The movie “The Thirteen Floor” works with the perception of reality. Going through the same line as “The Matrix”, the main inquiry is: do we really exist? Questioning the veracity of a setting, circumstances and people dealt with on a daily basis, the characters move from the “real” world, to a virtual space, to then return and realize the place called “home” is not so real after all, but just another figment of a virtual project. It’s a complicated matter that many philosophers have tried to make clear, but have been unable to, because it comes to a point where the limits of the “real”, and those of the “virtual” fade, as we float in the ambiguity of not knowing what’s real and what’s not, anymore.

For this, we will have to learn to accept the “here and now” as our reality, real or not. But for us, it is tangible; we can experience it, and manipulate it with our senses. We are free to move as we see fit, and we are responsible of the consequences that our actions may bring along. Actions that take place under our natural right of free will. But, are we really “free”? Free to move, to act, to not-act? Or are all these things random responses to a predetermined sequence of events that must take place, one way or another? What to believe, it is up to us.
