As some of you know, I spent a year in this country, near a city called Farizaj/Urosevac. Last year, Kosovo declared independance from its mother country, Serbia, with the US and most of the West's blessing. Since then, Serbia, Russia and a handful of other countries have protested this new State, refusing to give it recognition. The Serbians still living there (known as K-Serbs) are still insisting they live in part of Serbia. I spent a year there, in 2005, on deployment with the Arkansas, National Guard, serving as peacekeeper. So, after a year there, watching over the people there, talking with them and all, I feel almost a paternal fondness for the new nation as a whole. Now, I just have to find a picture with their collective faces covered in birthday cake. . .
