For English class we have to choose a theme, then pick five poems that are about that theme and then write an essay explaining how each of those poems are related to the theme and what components of the theme it covers.1
I have not even fully decided on my theme yet, I am either going to go with2
Death,3
Christianity4
OR5
Hope6
7
The problem is that I, preferably, would like to stay away from AllPoetry for this essay, and use maybe some more recognized poets, or different sites. Mostly because I just do not think I would like to include AP in this.8
The poems can be anywheres, online mostly.9
Anyone have any really good suggestions, for any of those topics? I especially cannot seem to find any non-cliche decent poetry about hope and Christianity.10

Stick with Death Ryan, it has so much more to offer with metaphor and depth and can easily lead you into a great essay. Hugs, Bunny

I think it is looking like death right now. Thanks Bunny.

if you go with christianity, george herbert is pretty rockin' and there are tonnes of poems to choose from:
http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/herbert/herbbib.htm
and randomly, i think it'd be cool to analyse the theme -- or at least somewhat explore it -- of death as presented in "carpe diem" poems of the metaphysical period as a potential "regression" to the classical, pre-christian ideals and beliefs. of course, the thesis isn't wholly true or explored, but i just thought i'd throw that out there in case you find it as interesting as i do

I just checked a few of his poems -- pretty awesome stuff, I'll have to go back when I have more time. Thats a wicked thesis, but I don't really think it is what my teacher is looking for. If you ever do write it though, you'll have to let me know.

I don't know many other poets apart from these here, but for Christianity try T.S Eliot.
He was hugely influenced by his conversion to the Anglican Church when he moved to England, in whatever year he moved.
Ash Wednesday is brilliant for analysing. And is a honestly fantastic read.
And for death, maybe try Slyvia Plath, especially her later ones. Though they tended to allude more to suicide than anything, but it's still death, I guess.
Other contempory poets who deal with a variety of topics:
John Agard, Imitaz Dharker, Carol-Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage, Ted Hughes - I'm just reguritating my AS/GCSE poetry syallbus now
(check the spelling on these, I can never remember how to spell 'Slyvia' or Imitizaz
I hope some of these do you good.
And even if you don't chose Eliot for Christanity, try to read Ash Wednesday anyway. It's long, very long, and quite confusing with plently of peculiar and utterly abstract imagery, but it's worth the struggle. As is the Wasteland, also by Eliot, but it's not as good as Ash Wednesday.

Wow~
Hmmmmmmmmm You know if You Google...
the theme and poetry...I imagine You will get a slew of Author's that may or may not sound familiar~
and You can cite Your source also~
You can get it done in a snap~

Sounds like You have a project ahead of You
but a Fun one

just google 'poems death' etc. and you'll get a variety of sites, from novice to old poetry... I'd pick a couple of famous old poets, then a few modern, then a novice...

-
I like the idea of 2 old, 2 modern and a novice... the problem I was having with google today was that it was giving me all older poetry or all novice poetry... and nothing else.

Up until yesterday, I had no clue that it was proper to, in English, double-space after periods. Like this. Two spaces. Funky, eh? 1 Apparently, my teacher does not dock points for it, because she barely ever has any students who know this. 2 I did not know this!!! 3 I tried writing with the two spaon Nov 11 10:08 AM, 100 words. → 14 comments, Add one?
