Opinions Please?

Well, for those of you that don't know I live in South Carolina. Anyway, South Carolina's Governer's School for the Arts. ( http://www.scgsah.org/ offical website) I've really been torn about applying. If I were to apply it would be for creative writing. The requirements are nearly endless it seems like. I know I have the grade and for the portfolio they want eithe eight poems, a short story no longer than ten pages, or a chapter from a novel no longer than ten pages with an explaination of how it ties into the novel. (It's allowed to be an unfinshed novel.)1

I have to decide soon if I'm going to apply because that would mean getting together my portfolio, talking to my parents about it, talking to my friends about it, making sure we have the money to go, etc. It's only about 30 minutes from where I live so I'd be able to visit home often.2

Considering a great deal of my poems and prose are up here, I figured I'd ask my fellow AP poets what they thought. I've asked a few of my friends and my family and they've all said that they think I'm good enough to have a very good shot at getting in, but we've all seen American/Canadian/British/etc/ Idol... Their families tell them they are good enough to win it too. So, I'm asking you guys. What do you think? Should I go for it or should I just stick with my normal high school?3

I have long lists of why I want to go and why I don't. Both are very valid but I just can't completely let go of the idea of going. Thanks for your opinions. 4

On a completely random note I started a novel I've been meaning to get going for quite some time. I'm not sure if I'll stick with it, but even though i only have about a page I like how it's going.

Well, if you really want to do something with your writing as a future thing then I would say go for it. If YOU think you have what it takes then you should at least try. If you do make it in, then you can go, but if you don't then you can say you tried and it won't bug you later in life with you thinking "Well, if I HAD applied to it...." I would say that if you do try you should see if you can mix and match your stuff. Like maybe put poems AND short story/novel stuff. That will show that you can do more than one thing and multi-talented people who are GOOD at both are more likely to make it in than someone who is only good at one of the things. They like versatility. ^^b
Ultimatly the choice is up to you if you REALLY want to go or not. But try not to think about what you want right now and think what you might want or what might help you in the future. That school would look great on college apps, but do you want to make a living out of writing?
Thats all I can say. Sorry if that didn't help at all. Good luck in choosing!

  • I agree. Go for it. What have you got to lose? Just make sure you have a backup plan in case it doesn't go through like you plan. Also, your writing is rockin', so I don't think you've anything to worry about. ^_^

If you apply and get accepted, you can still change your mind later, can't you? As opposed to not applying, and then later regretting that you missed the opportunity and crying because your dog food is stale?

I would stick with the basic high school for now, but that's just me.

Is this school a pretty hefty penny? If not, I suggest following your heart if it is one step closer to achieving your future accomplishments.

      Maybe...

Yes and no. Two years, one time $250 fee and $3000 a year for food ((really isn't that much actually...)) and one or two other one time fees. I've briefly brought it up to my parents and I'm about 90% sure we could pretty easily afford it.

I know a lot of people who had to drop out/leave certain schools because money was an issue. I am just saying be careful of how you play your cards.

You make a vaild point. There are also lots of scholarships available if you can't afford to pay. So basically if you get in and can't pay for it then it doesn't matter. Which is nice.

  • Just letting everyone know, I changed my name and face. The new name? Yo amor tù siempre. (AP wouldn't let me put the special character over the "U" though. Grrr.) It is Spanish for "I love you always." I just really like it. I may go back to Starlight-Owl, but for now I am yo amor tù siempre. Obviously there is a

  • Okay. I am about to rant majorly. So, please don't read if you don't care. Here goes. Alright. I have a very close-knit group of friends. We stick up for each other and are there for each other no matter what. Now, we aren't popular. Far from it. We consist of the scene-dress kids, nerds, dorks, artsy kids, band ge
