Science Fiction and why Geeks adore it.

Ah. From Star Trek to Stargate to Battlestar Galactica. Most people associate such fandom of such shows to be a 'geek' thing, but, my friends, you'll find its more than the scientific babble that attracts the male audience. It's those incredibly hot, butt kicking women that spice up the screen! Duh.

I mean, take Amanda Tapping in SG-1, where she stars as the incredibly brainy blonde Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, and when she spoke those pseudo-scientifical technobabble on the show, she makes us believe it. Wholeheartedly. Wormholes exist? If you say so, ma'am.

Women will most definitely agree that they watch a series, and watch the men too.

And of course, if the storyline's great, and the VFX awesome, its an added bonus!

Some of my favourites, in no particular order --

Amanda Tapping - All Time favourite ... from Stargate SG-1.
Claudia Black - Farscape
Gillian Anderson - X-Files. I hear there's a new movie.
Tricia Helfer - Battlestar Galactica
Sigourney Weaver - Alien - where the role of female action hero was born.
Jewel Staite - Firefly & Stargate Atlantis
Morena Baccarin - Firefly & SG-1
Milla Jovovich - The Fifth Element
Carrie Fisher - No one forgets her golden bikini in Star Wars III
Carrie Ann Moss - Matrix
Monica Belluci - If Trinity's on here, its only fair Persephone gets a mention.
Katherine Heigl - I didn't know this girl from Roswell would go on to star in Grey's Anatomy, but I'm glad she did. Makes the show bearable.

I'm sure there are more ... way more ... but these are the ones that jump to mind.

Oh, yeah, my wife doesn't mind. Absolutely. I have zero chance with any of these women. She fancies Michael Shanks (on SG-1) herself.

RJ - Self Proclaimed SciFi Geek.

I would say that I have always been more of a fantasy geek myself but my partner has had an influence over me and is shifting me slightly towards the sci-fi side of geekery now. He got me into Firefly which i totally loved, although it has that corney gun slinging western feel to it that Im kinda into anyway. I have also been subjected to SG Atlantis which I thought was the height of geekiness when I caught a few episodes that he and my other housemate were watching over dinner but I sadly have to admit that it grew on me. The problem with that one though is that Ive only seen the odd episode here and there and only the later ones so I aways feel like Im missing something. I think my fav character from that is Todd, I love his darker, drier sense of humour and find it a nice contrast to the more American humour from the rest of the characters.

My partner also likes Jewel Staite. He is into 'practical women' and his fantasy kind of girl would be an enginere or a scientist/doctor, both of which are roles she plays. He was most dissappointed in one SGA scene where she is in bed but was wearing pj's rather than sleeping naked. He did get a slap for that comment, lol.

Granted, its engraved and all, but still ... ) Christmas in Australia isn't quite the same, as, say England. I went there once

  • Gawd. I can't seem to iron out my head. It's like someone's shoved a plastic bag over my head, and I can't breathe. I can't focus. I can't express myself. There's this story, this potential bestseller (I wish), stuck inside my head, the start on the tip of my mind, but as soon as pen touches paper, it's like I've for
