origninally from Bronx, NY----
grew up in the city,,hated it really,,,but spent summers in Vermont,,love cows, farms, country---
now live in southern illinois,,lots of this reminds me of vermont
married to a writer, laura demali gilbert,,,short stories and poetry,,wonderful writer,,,,,wonderful wife! gives me so much inspiration/
poetry has been my lifeline,,,, i am lucky to get to teach workshops at the Heartland Writers Conference in sikeston mo. every other year, and workshops for the Southern Illinois writers guild,,,,and it enables me to share my love for the genre,,and try to imprint upon my students what an open genre it is,,many styles , many tastes,,
and when i teach my lit classes and we do poetry i stress to students that poetry is not about wrong or right---it is not about figuring out what the author was thinking but rather what we the readers are thinking as we read the pieces,,,
poetry belongs to the reader much more than the writer--
i don't miss the city,,but miss the Yankees being so close and am still a rabid fan--
enjoy reading the poetry here,,,,,it inspires me!
my real name is ken gilbert, but i go by the nickname "fog" since i was 19---and my pen name since the mid-seventies,,jacob erin-cilberto,,,cilberto having been my grandfather's real name before he was naturalized as an orphan in this country and they changed it---

poetryality on August 17, 2006I agree wholeheartedly with your statement above regarding poetry. The art is as much for the reader as it is for the writer. The advantage for the writer is the therapeutic value of getting feelings, events, situations, and circumstances of life... on paper. The reader reaps the benefits even if they cannot fully identify with what is writtten. For sure there is someone we are speaking to with each line written.
I teach as well. Creative Writing for students ages 12 through college age. I encourage my students to "free flow", write a three to five minute flow of sentiments, void of grammar or punctuation (edit once the thoughts are on paper). What a tremendous blessing to be able to express ourselves through the written word.
Enough babbling! I am off to read some of your poetry. I am sure I will find some very interesting musing.
Much Love & Many Blessings ♥
Renee
