A Birthday Poem for Darlene,
I know that it’s your birthday now and 71’s your age
Today’s the day for you to say “I’ve turned another page”.
It’s a pity that my mother never taught me how to bake
or I’d be flat out making you a special birthday cake.
I’d stick in 70 candles and I’d light them each apart
because, you see, to me you’ll always be still young at heart
and, if I got the number wrong and need another one,
I can always stop at the candle shop and buy some just for fun!
But numbers are irrelevant; what matters is the thought
of who you are and what you are – some things just can’t be bought.
This card I’m sending you today is not to show I’m dutiful
but to say, however old today, “I THINK YOU’RE PRETTY BEAUTIFUL!!”
HAPPY BIRTHDAY !
