- Welcome to the allpoetry tutorial -
This tutorial is designed to show you as easily as possible how to some basic things on the site:- Learn to navigate the site
- Add a poem
- "Feature" your poem
- Find a poem to comment on
- Learn to navigate the site
-
Step 1 - Learn your way around
First thing is to learn how to get around the site. There are five basic areas of navigation:
- Top: "Your links", to your page, favorites, etc.
- Middle Top: "Main Navigation", to Poetry, Contests, etc. Click the logo to get back to the front page.
- Top sidebar: "Local Navigation". We show things here relative to the current "area" here. Sometimes this area doesn't exist at all, and you just see the "bottom sidebar" higher.
- Bottom sidebar: "Community" things which are always there, like the chatterbox, online list, and featured poems.
- Bottom links: Handy links like to the chat-room, or ones that didn't fit in elsewhere, as well as links to our other sites.
Still confused? There's a longer explanation of the areas of the page on the general help page, but I suggest you just dive into the tutorial for now.
You can always get to a help page by clicking Help in the top links. To get back to the tutorial, look under Help Areas and click Tutorial. - Top: "Your links", to your page, favorites, etc.
-
Step 2 - Add your poem
- Click "Add poem" in the top "Your Links" navigation.
- Enter your poem information. It's best to write your poem on your computer first, and save a copy there just in case. Then choose Edit → Select All, then Edit → Copy, then in the poem form at Allpoetry choose Edit → Paste
- Click Submit Poem at the bottom of the page
- You'll be taken to the background customization page. This is a bit confusing, so just click "Use default background" for now.
- You'll be taken to your new poem. It's on the internet for anyone to see, and hopefully you'll get a comment soon!
- Click "Add poem" in the top "Your Links" navigation.
-
Step 3 - Learn about adding a "Feature" or "Comment Reward"
How can you make your poem stand out? Allpoetry has two areas: 1) Comment rewards, which will put your poem in the randomized list people see when they click the "Poetry" main navigation link, and 2) The Featured box, shown in the bottom right corner of all pages
Each of these areas requires points, which you should get first by commenting on some other poetry.
1) After that, to add a comment reward, click "Poetry" in the main navigation, then click Add reward in the right side links (near the bottom).
2) Add your poem to the featured box by clicking Add yours below the other poems currently being featured.
What is a "featured poem", or "reward"?- You earn points by commenting.
- You then "pay" a certain number of points to get your poem listed in the featured box. It's like advertising.
- Under the Featured Poems heading, click add yours.
- Choose your poem from the drop-down list of poems:

- The point cost for each comment varies depending on how many other people want to be in the featured box. This is shown as "current cost per comment is X"
- The number of comments you can reward is shown as "You can reward X comments"
- Enter a number of comments to reward in the box. The point cost will update to it's right.

- Click 'Add Feature'. You'll be taken to a list of your current rewards, and how many comments are left on them.
- You earn points by commenting.
Step 4 - Comment on a poem!
Lets read a really good poem.- Click Poems in the top links section.
- This is a list of the poems that are most popular this week.
- Choose one that sounds interesting to you. Maybe it's in a category you're interested in?
- Enter a comment at the bottom of the poem. Often people will "return" comments, and comment on one of your poems.
- If you think this poem was really good, give it some applause with the
options. A comment is required to applaud.
